The Programme is directed to young professionals with work experience and a high motivation to contribute to introducing a sustainable energy supply and to the development in the Arab region in general, which includes a keen interest in the other culture and language.

Sustainable energy supply will remain the most crucial challenge of the Arab region for the coming decades. For bilateral projects, there is a need for energy experts being familiar with the culture, language and politics of both sides.

The objective of the Master Programme is to train more and better qualified people to help implement standards in Renewable Energies and Energy Efficiency - RE&EE - in the energy sector as one of the main priorities of German-Arab bilateral co-operation programmes.

The programme is run by two Universities - the University of Kassel and the Cairo University - in cooperation with institutions and companies in the renewable energy and energy efficiency (RE&EE) sector. Both universities bring to the programme profound expertise in research and development and capacity building in the field of RE&EE.

    What do we expect?

In order to participate you should

  • be highly motivated to learn and work in a bicultural environment,

  • have a professional or academic background related to the energy sector,
  • be fluent in English (TOEFL 550/220/76 or IELTS 6.5 band or equivalent),
  • be willing to take up leadership positions in the future in the energy sector.

Contents

The fulltime study lasts for 21 months, without semester breaks, starting in July each year and is divided into three parts.

  • 6 months at Cairo University in Egypt,
  • 6 months at Kassel University in Germany
  • Approximately 9 months internship in an institution, company or in developing projects in the MENA region, preparing a Master Thesis.

The programme is equivalent to 90 credit points according to the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). One ects equals to 30 hours of workload per semester.
The first 13 months provides the students with the all over knowledge of the renewable energy and energy efficiency sector from political, economical, social, ecological, and administrative perspectives and also with an individual technical specialisation in Renewable Energies. The programme consists of technical basics, technical specialisations and non technical modules.

In total the students have to reach minimum 60 and maximum 65 ects in module examinations.

The programme starts with an intensive language course in German and Arab and various general sub modules that are taught in compact classes like e.g. Mathematical Basics for knowledge levelling for students without technological background, a project work about Potentials of RE&EE, Presentation and Moderation Techniques and Intercultural Communication.

After the first year of study, the students will move to companies and institutions engaged in Renewable Energies / Energy Efficiency, preferably in the Arab region, in order to work on their Master Thesis.

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.

Application procedure

The application procedure is described on the REMENA web site. Please follow the instructions given under APPLICATION. As of 2012 we offer 2 intakes each year.

For winter term with start of studies in Cairo in October deadlines are:

  • Scholarship applications: February 15.
  • Selfpayers may apply until May 15.

For summer term with start of studies in Kassel in April deadlines are:

  • Scholarship applications: August 15.
  • Selfpayers may apply until November 15.

The participants should aspire to make a career in the international energy sector.

Minimum requirements are:

  • bachelor degree in engineering, natural sciences, economics, social sciences
  • one year working experience
  • high motivation
  • fluent in English

Funding details

Costs and fundingTo register for the program the student has to pay an overall amount of 10,000 Euro costs for special services. In addition, there is a service fee for each semester amounting to about 240 € in Kassel and about 85 € in Cairo.
Applicants from the following countries only are eligible for scholarships from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD):
Germany, Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Morocco, Palestinian Territories, Syria, Tunisia, Yemen and – as a subject for approval by DAAD – from Lebanon and Iraq.

Students applying for a DAAD scholarship have to fill in the DAAD application form down-loadable from our site. Send in the completed form as the last six pages of your application documents to uni-assist.

Deadline for scholarship applications:

  • February 15 for winter term, i.e. start of studies in October in Cairo
  • August 15 for summer term, i.e. start of studies in April in Kassel

Deadline for self payers:

  • May 15 for winter term, i.e. start of studies in October in Cairo
