This specialist Software Engineering route enables you to develop high-level programming skills, combining the theory, tools, methods and management techniques necessary to create successful software products. This is a challenging course, leading you to the point where you can program and develop software for a range of applications. You will design, build and test software, ranging from individual code units to complete systems. Based largely on object-oriented principles, you will apply analysis techniques, select appropriate design methodologies, choose suitable programming constructs and devise effective testing strategies.

You will also develop a professional approach to project management, understanding of IT ethics, as well as social issues such as sustainability. You will develop practical design skills in the development of attractive and usable web sites and a sound understanding of research methods to underpin your dissertation. This provides you with a broad and well-balanced perspective, preparing you for an exciting career in the industry, or the foundation to go on to do further research.

You will need some previous experience of writing computer programs in order to be accepted on this programme. Many of our software engineering students study part-time to update the programming skills they use at work.
