In the popular mind, ecumenism is about unity amongst Christians and dialogue with other religions. In its root meaning ecumenism refers to the Greek oikoumene, the `one inhabited earth.´ At the Irish School of Ecumenics, this root meaning has led us to a deeper and broader conception of ecumenism. It involves understanding the relationships within and between different traditions, and promoting dialogue and peace.
Our Ecumenics programme focuses on three key arenas for dialogue: within the Christian traditions, with other religious traditions, and with others committed to the ethical dimensions of political engagement. At our idyllic Milltown campus, students pursue a rigorous course of studies in these areas.
The new M.Phil. in Intercultural Theology and Interreligious Studies (IT IS) provides and innovative and challenging time of study in an increasingly significant field which has emerged from theological and religious studies scholarship. It seeks to take the concerns that have traditionally been developed in missology and ecumenics and in an interdisciplinary approach, allow course participants from a wide variety of backgrounds, to have a greater understanding of the theoretical and practical issues involved.
This course is designed as a series of 4 tracks, from which students choose one:
* Christian Ecumenical Theologies
* World Christianity and Intercultural Theology
* Comparative Theology and Interreligious Studies
* Religions and Ethics in a Pluralist World
Each track shares 2 common core modules;
* Translating God(s): Intercultural Theology and Interreligious Studies
* Research and Methods
plus a third - and track-specific - core course that defines the track´s subject-matter and explores its key texts, contexts and cultures. Each track also offers a range of optional modules - or concentrations - from which students choose three.
