Studying Molecular Science in Erlangen, Germany
Molecules and their interactions with their environments are the basis of life. Many complex chemical processes play an important role not only in biology or in medical research but they are also linked to emerging technologies and modern research areas - such as the fields of energy generation or storage.

If you are considering to study Chemistry or Molecular Science we hope you will seriously consider the Department of Chemistry and Pharmacy at the Friedrich-Alexander-University of Erlangen-Nürnburg, Germany.

Our department is characterized by an unsurpassed commitment to the development of our students into well-rounded scientists who can take on leadership roles in industry, academia or government. Our students enjoy all the benefits of attending a world-class university consistently ranked among the best in Germany: outstanding facilities, great faculty, and a stimulating group of fellow students.

Interaction with world-leading scientists
The Department's research activities cover a wide spectrum that ranges from basic to applied research in the areas of Chemistry, Biology, Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Science. These are closely linked to each other and are involved in close collaboration and numerous interdisciplinary research projects within the University (Cluster of Excellence, Collaborative Research Centers, Graduate Schools) and with other national and internationals institutions (GRF Research Programs, EU, FMER, Volkswagenstiftung, GAES, Humboldt-Stiftung, Bavarian Research Program, etc.). Consequently, the Department of Chemistry and Pharmacy creates the molecular bridge between the Schools of Medicine and Engineering.

The research at the Department of Chemistry and Pharmacy has received top rankings not only within Germany but also at the international level. The most recent independent study coordinated by the German Science Council rates the Chemistry in Erlangen as "world class". It was stated that particular strengths of the Chemistry in Erlangen are the performance in research and quality, impact and effectiveness of research.

Master program Molecular Science
Interdisciplinarity is a key element of our 5-year Bachelor and Master level program Molecular Science. It involves modern facets in chemistry, physics, biology, pharmacy and medicinal sciences.

Already during the Bachelor phase, students begin specializing in either Molecular Life Science or Molecular Nano Science. This takes place after about 2 years which serve to educate basic chemistry and some preliminary insights into biochemistry.

Common to Molecular Life Science and Molecular Nano Science are molecular aspects. This, not only, provides a unique character but it also helps in distinguishing it from basic studies in biology and / or materials sciences.

Likewise, the Master program is divided into Molecular Life Science and Molecular Nano Science. Notable, changing foci renders feasible at any time, that is, during the Bachelor and Master phases.

A decision to start with the studies of Molecular Science at the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg opens the door to a next-generation education and research.

Applications are strongly encouraged.

Subsequent to the Master program there is the possibility to join the Graduate School Molecular Science (part of the Bavarian Excellence Initiative) for achieving a PhD. degree.

Contents

The Master study course Molecular Science is in terms of content based on the Bachelor-level Program but is more discovery led. The regular period of study takes three semester including all exams and Master Thesis. You need 90 ECTS-Points to get a successful degree.

The students have the opportunity for a specialization and a deepened study of both partitions Molecular Nano Science and Molecular Life Science. The Master of Science (M.Sc.) degree is a further vocational and research qualifying degree of the scientific study.

Modular Structure
The Master study is modularly structured. The separate modules and their thematic focuses are listed below. The Module guide constitutes the contents of each courses in detail.

* MS17: Molecular Nanoscience Compilation of basic considerations of the supramolecular organization. The analysis of material properties of molecular, macromolecular and supramolecular aggregates is focused.

* MS18: Drug Discovery An integrated and interactive course concerning development of active ingredient synthesis (including combinative chemical methods), biological screening methods for testing the activity, assay technologies for testing the biological activity, virtual docking and computer supported 'quantitative structure activity relations' (QSAR).

* MS19: Molecule Syntheses This module handles strategic processes of inorganic and organic molecules and molecules with material scientific and biological relevance.

* MS20: Theory This module centers the quantum-mechanical description of molecules and particularly the theory of catalytic reaction as well as the computer-assisted modelling of molecular materials and biological systems.

* MS21: Physical Chemistry The characteristics of molecular materials is up to the arrangement of building blocks especially to the expansion in three directions in space. Is at least one of three lenghts within the nanometer area the quantum conditions have any effect and constitute the novel characteristics of nano-materials. It is important for practical application to systematical structure surfaces on the nanometer-scale. This shall be exemplified by means of the current research within this module.

* MS22: Molecular Biology Molecular and biochemical fundamentals of the genetics and the metabolism will be taken up and will be pulled together with organisms as well as collectivization of miscellaneous organisms. It will be based on the molecular scientific consideration by teaching the macromolecular detection as it is important in signal chain and coordinated metabolic pathways. The biological effects of macromolecular interactions like receptor-ligand interaction on the surface of cells, signal transmissions in the inside of cells and gene-regulatory mechanisms for acclimatization of cellular properties on the environment will be deepened in an integrated curriculum of biochemistry, genetics and microbiology.

* MS23: Medical Chemistry This module imparts continuative aspects of the medical chemistry like asymmetrical active ingredient synthesis, solid phase supported parallel-synthesis, biochemical analysis as well as instrumental drug and food analysis.

Requirements

Prerequisites for admission to examination concerning the Master-level program is a superior successful completed and appropriate (Bachelor level) study.

Internal Applications
Students of the Bachelor-level program Molecular Science at the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg get the qualification for admission to the Master-level program with a Bachelor certificate that at least has the overall grade "good". Alternatively there is still the possibility to get the admission by the aptitude test procedure.

Applications from outside the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg
External applicants, who

* have taken a Bachelor examination at another German or foreign university or
* have acquired the diploma, Bachelor or Master from a German university of applied sciences or
* have an other comparable university degree

need to count to the 20% of the best students of their year and they need to pass the degree with an overall grade better than 2,4 (degrees that are graded with an other grading system need to have a predicate similar to "well passed").

Applicants will be affiliated if they have passed the aptitude test procedure. The degrees have to be equal to the Bachelor examination of the Molecular Science study course.
