Programme Description

The primary goal of the M.Sc. programme is to equip graduate students with an integrated set of skills that will allow them to develop their professional careers in this area of information technology. The particular focus of the programme is to equip students with the theoretical and practical background that is necessary to enable them to participate in the design of complex networked and distributed systems.

The programme not only presents the state of the art in the design and implementation of networks and distributed systems but also prepares students to embrace future developments in the field. Specific emphasis is placed on the presentation and assimilation of challenging and stimulating material that has a demonstrated professional relevance.

The focus of the programme is on skills that are not normally imparted to students during their undergraduate years and that will develop graduates' capacity as leaders in the field. Thus, the programme is intended to prepare graduates to pursue careers in industry, as software architects and project managers, to establish their own consulting or software development companies, or to undertake basic research in the field.

The M.Sc. programme (90 ECTS credits) is full-time and runs over a one-year period commencing in October of each year. The programme is assessed based on a combination of assigned coursework, written examination, and a dissertation.

The programme is composed of six modules that are taken by all students (10 ECTS credits each), plus a research dissertation (30 ECTS credits).

The modules are:

  • Networked Applications (10 ECTS credits)

covers applications of the Internet and Intranets ranging from email and the Web to electronic commerce, collaboration and community services, distributed artificial intelligence, and information retrieval.

  • Data Communications and Networks (10 ECTS credits)

introduces the fundamentals of computer networks and networking technology.

  • Distributed Systems (10 ECTS credits)

covers the most important paradigms for building distributed applications including client-server computing, distributed object technology, and component models.

  • Software Engineering for Concurrent and Distributed Systems (10 ECTS credits)

covers object-oriented analysis and design techniques and their application to concurrent and distributed systems.

  • Management of Information Systems (10 ECTS credits)

covers the theory and practice associated with entrepreneurship and new business planning.

  • Security and Management of Networks and Distributed Systems (10 ECTS credits)

introduces the fundamentals of computer and network security and investigates different approaches to network management and the management of advanced information services.

Together these modules entail approximately twenty contact hours per week (including lectures, tutorials, seminars, and laboratory classes) during Michaelmas and Hilary terms.

Most modules require students to complete further coursework usually contributing to one of four coursework projects that must be completed by each student.

These are:

Internet Application Development an individual project requiring the development of a substantial intelligent Internet application.

Data Communications Research a team-based research project on some aspect of data communications and designed to introduce students to the process of finding resources for, planning, managing, conducting, and documenting research.

Distributed Systems Software Engineering a team-based project requiring the analysis, design and implementation of a large concurrent distributed application using an industrial-strength development methodology and project management strategy.

Business Plan Development a team-based project requiring the preparation and presentation of a detailed and credible business plan designed to attract appropriate funding for an innovative business venture.

In addition, each student will undertake an individual research project leading to submission of a dissertation (30 ECTS credits), which is expected to be of a publishable standard, on some topic chosen in consultation with the Course Director.

Examinations take place during Hilary and/or Trinity term each year and the dissertation is to be submitted in the following September.
