It brings together the latest research coupled with the best internationally accepted management practice and relates these to the needs of today´s organisation.
Many graduates of computer science, computer engineering, information technology and information systems courses start their careers as developers, software engineers or in technical area like network support. However, as their careers develop, they find themselves increasingly confronted with business and management problems which, notwithstanding their technical skills and experience, they have not been trained to handle.
This course is designed to fill this gap by providing a practical grounding in critical aspects of IS/ICT management together with an understanding of current thinking about ICT management and governance.
The course is designed for information systems/technology professionals in early or mid career who:
o have recently been appointed to management positions or
o see their long term career in ICT management or
o would like to understand key business aspects of ICT better or
o are interested in current thinking and research about ICT management.
The syllabus comprises a balanced mix of practice and theory. An important aspect of the course is a continuing close involvement with business, industry and the public sector. The course is taught by a mixture of academics with a background in industry and senior professionals from both the private and public sectors. Between them, this group bring a great wealth of experience, personal achievement and industry knowledge to the programme. At the same time, the academic component of the course is design to instill a high degree of rigour in thinking, analysis and research.
On completion of the M.Sc., students will be equipped with the professional knowledge, expertise and competencies required to assume more senior roles in IS/ICT management and/or in the IS/ICT industry. The course also provides a platform for those interested in pursuing research, to proceed to a higher degree.
The course is a two year, part time, evening programme. Each year is comprised of two 12-week semesters. The programme is also divided into two streams:
o A practice stream which makes extensive use of case based learning and
o An academic stream focused on research and including a research dissertation.
The course objectives are to develop students' managerial skills in:
o Strategic IS planning,
o ICT acquisition and
o ICT selling
whilst at the same time developing students' abilities in critical thinking, analysis and ICT research. Students are actively encouraged to pursue and research topics that are of interest to them and relevant to their work and careers.
