Location of University of Turku

Learning, Learning Environments and Educational Systems is a two year Master’s degree programme which trains experts and researchers for various national and international tasks in the field of Education. The programme concentrates on the focus points of the research conducted at the Faculty of Education: learning research, learning environments and research of educational systems. There are two research units at the Faculty which contribute to these various branches: Centre for Research on Lifelong Learning and Education (CELE) and Centre for Learning Research (CLR). Students major in Educational Science.

The LLEES Master’s degree programme is collaborating with some international partner universities. The students are encouraged to study one academic term in one of the partner universities.


Contents

The programme (120 ECTS credits) includes the following study modules:
- Orientation and General Studies 18 ECTS credits
- Advanced Studies in Educational Science 80 ECTS credits
- Elective Studies 22 ECTS credits

The Advanced Studies include a Master's thesis 40 ECTS credits.

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

Requirements

Who can apply?
Persons who have completed a lower university degree at a Bachelor’s level (equivalent to a Finnish Bachelor’s degree) in education, adult education, special education, or in other domains relevant to the master’s degree programme are eligible to apply to the programme. Also persons who have a Bachelor’s degree (equivalent to a Finnish Bachelor’s degree) and an official teacher’s qualification are eligible to apply to the programme. The degree must include at least three years of studies.

Persons who have completed a Finnish first-cycle polytechnic degree called ammattikorkeakoulututkintoand who have completed basic and intermediate studies (altogether min. 60 op/35 ov) in education, special education or adult education may apply to the programme.

The degree and studies required have to be completed by 2 August 2011 at 16.15 (Finnish time). Applicants who won’t get their degree certificate before the application period ends should enclose a statement from their home university stating the expected date of graduation.

The applicants must be proficient in English.

Language Requirements
The language of tuition of the programme is English thus the students should have good skills in English. The applicants should prove their knowledge of English in one of the following ways:

a) by passing the test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) with a minimum score of 575 on the paper-based test (PBT) or 90 on the internet-based test (IBT).

b) by passing the International English Language Testing Service (IELTS) with an overall band score of 6.5 and no individual score below 5.5.

c) by passing the Cambridge ESOL’s Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) with pass grade A, B or C.

d) by passing the Cambridge ESOL’s Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) with pass grade A, B, or C.

e) by passing the test for the National Certificate of Language Proficiency in English set by the Finnish National Board of Education with an average score of 5 (new proficiency scale, levels 1-6; corresponding to level 7 on the original proficiency scale, levels 1-9).

f) with a Bachelor's (or higher) degree conducted in English language in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, United Kingdom or United States.

g) with studies conducted in English (min. 20 ECTS) at the University of Turku.

No other language tests or statements of the applicant’s language skills will be accepted. IELTS and TOEFL tests taken more than two years prior to application deadline will not be accepted.
