Your work is planned and supervised by experienced College- and school-based tutors. Your own musical expertise provides the foundation for a full repertoire of skills and understanding. Our students come from a broad range of backgrounds, and are trained to contribute musically to a constantly developing field. Applicants must have a strong commitment to equal opportunities in education.
Teaching practice
Your introduction to teaching is a gradual process that is supported throughout by College- and school-based tutors. During the autumn term, you are initially based in College, following a set of preparatory subject studies workshops and education lectures. You are then placed in your first teaching practice school for four days a week, returning to College for subject studies on Fridays. In the spring term, this pattern is generally maintained, but in a second school. From the spring to the summer half-terms you are based full-time in your teaching practice school. School placements are drawn from a broad range of partnership schools.
You as a musician
We aim to develop teachers who operate as `musicians within education´, and encourage you to continue your personal music interests; this is not always easy, given the demanding nature of the programme. Your development as a creative musician is an essential element of your development as a music educator.
College-based studies
Lectures, discussions and practical workshops in College help to support and develop your school-based work, linking theoretical understanding with practical classroom competence. Subject sessions include: Music Information Technology; World Music; Creativity in Class; Instrumental Skills; Planning; Vocal Workshops; Conducting; Listening Skills; National Curriculum; Arrangements; Performance in Class; Links with Primary Music; Communicative Music Teaching.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
Take testYou should have an undergraduate or postgraduate degree (eg BA, BSc, MA, MSc etc) from a university in the United Kingdom. Your degree should be in your proposed main teaching subject area or in a closely-related subject which is a suitable preparation for entry to the programme. If your degree is in more than one subject, you should give a complete breakdown of the course units you studied within your degree when you submit your application to the GTTR: we will generally have to be satisfied that at least half of the content of your degree was in your proposed main teaching subject area.
As well as British qualifications, we accept many equivalent overseas qualifications: if you would like to know whether your qualifications meet our requirements, please contact the Admissions Office.
You must have GCSE Grade C or above in English Language and Mathematics (or recognised equivalents). Please note that English Language proficiency exams such as TOEFL, IELTS or the Cambridge First or Advanced Certificates are not acceptable.
If you do not have - or are not currently studying for - a GCSE in English or Mathematics, you may be eligible to sit the internal College tests; we advise you to apply early. We regret that these tests may not be used to overlook recent failure in GCSE examinations, and that you can only take the tests once. You cannot take the Goldsmiths English test if you are applying to study English, or the Goldsmiths Mathematics test if you are applying to study Mathematics.
