The Master's Degree Programme in Biomedical Imaging is a new Master´s degree programme, which started in September 2010. The programme is jointly administrated by the University of Turku and the Åbo Akademi University. The education is given in English. Both Finnish and international students are welcome to apply for the programme.
Biomedical imaging has emerged as currently one of the most important areas in basic bioscience and biomedical research as well as in clinical medicine and translational research. Biomedical imaging incorporates biological and medical imaging. The current technologies enable real-time and non-invasive visualization of molecules, structures and events in cells, tissues, and whole organisms. Application areas include cell and molecular biology, pharmacology, structural biology, nanotechnology and biomaterials research, and patient care and diagnostics.
The Master´s Programme in Biomedical Imaging aims to train professionals that will have a thorough understanding of diverse imaging technologies along with practical skills in a wide range of imaging methods and applications. The programme contains courses given by the both universities in the areas of biomedical imaging and leads to a Master of Science (M.Sc.) degree in Biomedical Imaging.
For more information about the programme, please see the programme website at the Åbo Akademi University.
The Master´s Degree in Biomedical Imaging is a two-year programme amounting 120 ECTS credits. Graduates of the programme are awarded a Master of Science (MSc) degree.
Practical courses will be given by the Åbo Akademi University and the University of Turku. The programme has also collaboration sites in the Nordic countries, Europe, USA, and Asia. Lecturers and expert from a broad Nordic network in imaging as well as top-ranking international experts from all over the world will be invited to participate in ongoing workshops, laboratory courses, seminars, and symposia. There is also a possibility of exchange with international university partners as a part of the Master´s thesis.
The programme will cover the following subject areas:
* Light microscopy, basic and advanced techniques
* Electron microscopy
* Tissue imaging and histopathology
* Nuclear medicine and magnetic resonance imaging
* Tomographic imaging techniques
* Flow-cytometry techniques and applications
* In vivo non-invasive imaging
* Mass-spectrometric imaging
* Structural analysis of molecules
* Nanotechnology
* Fluorescent probes, dye indicators and radiochemistry used in light
* microscopic and nuclear imaging modalities
* Software development and image analysis tools
* Multimedia editing
The programme (120 ECTS) consists of the following modules:
* Major subject studies in Biomedical Imaging (90 ECTS), including a Master´s Thesis in a suitable application area (40 ECTS), seminar and paper presentations
* Studies in different fields of bioimaging and related applications (22-25 ECTS), including selectable advanced courses representing techniques in microscopy, photonics, in vivo imaging, image analysis, multimedia editing, as well as international lecture series and hands-on courses
* Studies on Language and Finnish Culture (5-8 ECTS), including compulsory Finnish/Swedish course (5 ECTS)
