If you are involved in any aspect of defence acquisition then this course is relevant to you. Whether you are involved in establishing or managing capability requirements; engaged in procurement, commercial or contracting activities; or developing and implementing support solutions, this course will provide the underpinning knowledge and develop the critical thinking skills required for effctive management of defence acquisition.

This course offers three pathways during the second year of the course with each having a different focus in order to meet the needs of participant’s career aspirations.

The General Acquisition (GA) stream covers a broad range of topics and offers a wide range of electives so that the student can select topics that meet their current needs and future aspirations. The Through Life Support (TLS) stream gives a slightly different focus with a range of modules that underpin the TLS concept. The final element is a Commercial (Com) stream which includes a number of modules that cover topics such as Cost Estimating and Forecasting, Negotiation skills and a Legal/Contracting module. The three pathways are then reinforced by a 20,000 word Thesis which can be themed to complement the chosen stream.

The MSc programme also provides opportunity for recognition by a number of professional bodies. For example, this programme provides potential eligibility for exemption from the Professional Stage of the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply (CIPS) as this is a CIPS accredited course. The MSc is also accredited by the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT), providing you have at least four years experience in a management role, including at least two years at the level required by the international criteria. It also provides the opportunity to complete the Association of Project Management Professionals (APMP) examination.

The Centre for Defence and Acquisition is a Chartered Management Institute (CMI) Approved Centre (10205903) for the delivery of CMI accredited programmes. Students who successfully complete the Managing Acquisition Change module will be eligible to receive the CMI ‘Certificate in Management Consulting Essentials’. As an Approved Centre there is also scope for additional recognition for other combinations of study within the DAM and these are currently being explored together with opportunities for recognition by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), in both cases these are pending.
