Medicine is a fascinating, multi-disciplinary subject concerned with the restoration and preservation of health in humans. Practitioners of medicine seek to achieve these goals through the prevention, alleviation and cure of disease. There are a wide variety of specialist areas which can be divided according to the approach used (general practice, surgery, medicine, public health), the age of the patient (paediatrics, geriatrics) or the organ system requiring attention (cardiology, respiratory medicine, gastroenterology, etc).
Clinical Medicine is the domain of the physician dealing with patients in the hospital setting. It is distinct (although somewhat artificially) from Family Practice (also known as general practice), Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Surgery, Psychiatry and Paediatrics.
The Department of Clinical Medicine offers Masters Programme in Cardiology.
This course is either two or three years and is designed to provide a high level of postgraduate training for doctors wishing to become trained in non-invasive and invasive cardiology.
The course aims to provide the theoretical knowledge, technical skills and research skills necessary to run a comprehensive cardiac service. It consists of lectures, clinically supervised practical procedures in the management of the cardiac patient, and a research project or dissertation. The course is assessed by examination, continual assessment and assessment of the research project or dissertation.
