Suitable for those seeking a broader understanding of the principles of operational research and the methods and techniques applicable to industrial and military systems which lead to better decision-making.
Takes you on to employment in research establishments, industry or commerce or to further research leading to a PhD before employment.
You will be taught by Cranfield University academic staff at the Defence Academy - College of Management and Technology who understand the challenges of translating theory into practice. Visiting lecturers include experts from industry, research establishments and Government departments, particularly the MOD.
Operational research is used extensively in both industry and commerce and plays an important role in the military environment.
The increasing complexity and expense of new technology and the ever present pressures on available resources lead to increasing difficulty in military decision making. The Military Operational Research course provides opportunities for the modelling of specific systems and practical experience with relevant computer software.
The modular form of the course, consisting of a compulsory core and a selection of other modules, enables students to select the course of study most appropriate to their particular requirements.
MSc students must complete the taught phase, consisting of eight standard modules (including the two core modules) and four advanced modules, followed by an individual thesis in a relevant topic. Thesis topics will be related to problems of specific interest to students and sponsors or local industry wherever possible.
PgDip students are required to undertake the taught phase without the project.
PgCert students must complete the core module "Operational Research Techniques" together with five other modules; up to three of these may be advanced modules.
Each standard module consists of a one-week course of lectures and practical sessions followed by the equivalent of one week of assessed directed study.
Modules:
Standard modules offered include:
* Operational Research Techniques (core)
* Decision Analysis (core)
* Discrete and Continuous Simulation
* Weapon System Performance Assessment
* Logistics Modelling
* War Gaming and Combat Modelling
* Statistical Analysis and Trials
* Intelligent Systems
* Neural Networks
* Optimisation.
Two of the standard modules, Logistics Modelling and War Gaming and Combat Modelling are also offered using distance learning as an alternative to the normal mode of delivery. This creates a blended learning variant for part-time students.
Advanced modules, which enable students to explore some areas in greater depth, are offered in most of these topics. These advanced modules involve an additional two weeks of assessed directed study.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
