The ongoing success of the air transport industry has been made possible by rapid technological advances and associated high investment, resulting in demands for an increasingly skilled workforce. More recently, industry liberalisation and privatisation in many parts of the world has led to increased competition, spurring further gains in efficiency and a continued decline in air fares. In today's rapidly changing air transport environment the industry requires access to advanced and comprehensive knowledge, coupled with an in-depth understanding of its needs.

The MSc Air Transport Management is designed to equip you with the skills required to pursue a successful career in various sectors of the air transport industry, including, but not restricted to, airlines, airport companies and authorities, civil aviation departments, air transport consultancies and aerospace companies.

Contents

Structure

The Air Transport Management course provides students with a thorough grounding in all air transport issues as well as managerial, interpersonal, financial and analytical skills.

Many of the lecture modules include case study project sessions and seminars may also be led by senior visitors from industry. Air Transport Management students also receive a subscription to the online news service ‘Air Transport Intelligence’.

The course consists of three elements where students will be required to complete:

* seven modules
* one group project
* one individual research project

Modules

The six core modules are listed below:

* Air Transport Fundamentals
* Management Fundamentals
* Quantitative and Research Methods
* Airline Economics and Finance
* Airline Operations
* Airline Marketing

Optional modules (choose one from the following):

* Air Transport Engineering – Maintenance Operations
* Airline Fleet Planning
* Airport Business Management
* Safety Management

Group Project

Students are divided into groups and asked to solve a particular research problem. Each group submits a report and delivers a presentation of their findings and recommendations.

Research Project

The thesis is an opportunity to study a problem in detail, and sponsoring organisations may cooperate in the choice of a suitable subject. Research thesis topics vary widely and have recently included:

Assessment

Each module is assessed by an examination and/or assignment Students are also assessed on a group project and an individual research project.

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.

Requirements

1st or upper 2nd class UK honours degree (or equivalent) in any relevant discipline. A lower qualification plus a number of year’s relevant working experience may be accepted as equivalent. For those for whom English is a second language, an IELTS score of 7.0 is required.
