Location of Cranfield University

This course specifically combines the strengths of Cranfield University in technology, management and engineering to provide a learning experience which is directly focused on the needs of tomorrow’s automotive technology managers.

By exposing delegates to a broad range of technology disciplines, management practices and different organisational and cultural perspectives, the course aims to empower delegates to see the ‘big picture’ and to appreciate the different factors required for effective technology management within the context of the international automotive industry.

The content and structure of the course has been agreed with leading industrial figures. The Industrial Advisory Board for the programme works closely with the academic staff at Cranfield to ensures that all of the material taught on the programme is relevant, timely and meets the need of organisations competing within the automotive sector.

Course Objectives

To provide organisations and delegates with a clear understanding of advanced engineering technologies appropriate to the future of the automotive industry.

To provide organisations and delegates with the necessary strategic, financial, project and personnel management skills to enable them to lead multi-disciplined global engineering teams tasked with the introduction of new technology.

To provide high profile opportunities for delegates to demonstrate their new technical and management expertise to the industry.

Benefits for the Organisation

With a teaching emphasis on “real-world” case studies, the course aims to improve the decision making and strategic problem solving skills of all delegates.

By exposing delegates to a broad range of technology disciplines, management practices and different organisational and cultural perspectives, the course aims to empower delegates to see the “big picture” and to appreciate the many different factors required for effective technology management within the context of the international automotive industry.

The sponsoring organisations should view those employees attending the course as one of the mechanisms through which innovative technology solutions and management practices can be acquired and fed-back into their organisations.

Benefits for the Delegate

Delegates will receive the management training that is often a pre-requisite for career progression to senior management levels within an organisation. On successful completion of the course, delegates will not only receive an MSc degree, they will also have made professional and personal contacts from a wide range of different industries, organisations and academic/research institutions.

Contents

Structure

The programme format follows the established teaching methods currently employed within the University’s Executive MBA. The part-time MSc programme requires each delegate to study 12 modules. Within each module there is a strong emphasis on delegate participation through group work and syndicate exercises in conjunction with presentations from leading experts from commerce, industry and academia.

Modules

* Fundamentals of Automotive Technology Management
* Sustainable Energy Technologies
* Vehicle Systems and Advanced Driver Aids
* Project Management
* Innovation and Technology Management
* Automotive Systems Engineering
* Advanced Materials and Lightweight Structures
* Automotive Manufacturing Systems
* Strategic Management
* Personal and Professional Development
* Hybrid Vehicle Technology and Integration
* Advanced Automotive Powertrain Technology

Research Project

Each delegate is required to plan, conduct and report on a programme of research into one or more aspects of automotive technology management, with components of both management and technology being compulsory. The delegates are expected to demonstrate their skills at solving technological and management problems directly related to their discipline. The research topic will be defined in collaboration with an allocated research project supervisor from the academic teaching team, and draw on the delegates own automotive background. It is expected that the delegate will take some role in initiating and guiding the project.

Assessment

Each module is assessed by means of a post-module assignment, and/or written examination. In total, the taught element contributes 60% of the MSc assessment. The remaining 40% of the final assessment is based on the individual research project. The subject of this project can be chosen to match the research needs of the sponsoring organisation and/or the career aspirations of the delegate.
