Introduction

The growing complexity of designing machinery for a competitive market has stimulated an industrial awareness of the vital role which the design engineer plays in the manufacturing process. In particular, the availability of new materials, tighter financial controls over manufacturing costs, increased product sophistication and more stringent standards have placed a greater emphasis on the technical merits of design. The range of computational and testing skills lies beyond the scope of the first degree in Mechanical Engineering.

This MSc course seeks to provide accelerated training, which will permit the graduate to readily accept the additional responsibilities provided by the requirement for a more productive role in industry.

Funding opportunity

A £9,000 award is available from the Petrofac/Royal Academy of Engineering Fellowships for the Enhanced Graduate Engineer scheme, for students wishing to commence their studies in September/October 2011. Awards are aimed at UK/EU graduate engineers who wish to pursue a career in the oil and industry but have decided to enhance their skill set first by studying a full-time Masters’ course. For more information including eligibility and application information please contact us.

Access unique facilities

Students have access to our state-of-the-art CAE tools, gear design software, FEA/FEM software packages and rotor dynamics software. Significant exposure to these modern, state-of-the-art tools and associated techniques enables students to exploit this technology for maximum benefit, while being mindful of good engineering practice and international standards. In addition, students will be able to demonstrate good design management and intellectual skills of communication in a group working environment.

Focus on your interests

The Machine Design specialism aims to provide students with a greater degree of training in the area of complex machine system design, and to carry out design exercises from concept to final product. The taught part of the course aims to furnish students with the necessary theoretical knowledge in the areas of stress analysis, machine dynamics, transmissions, computer aided engineering, and project management. Theoretical aspects of the taught course are further put into practice by means of design case studies contemplating real engineering problems.

Students are given the opportunity to prepare design specifications, carry out conceptual design, develop mathematical models for the solution of design problems, carry out structural integrity assessments and if appropriate build and test their own designs.

Benefit from our reputation

Cranfield University has been at the forefront of postgraduate education in engineering at Cranfield since 1946. We have a global reputation for our advanced postgraduate education, extensive research and applied continuing professional development. Structure

The MSc in Design of Rotating Machines comprises taught modules and a research project.

Modules

The available taught modules are listed below and the course syllabus can be view here:

* Computer Aided Engineering
* Fatigue and Fracture
* Gear Design
* Management for Technology
* Noise and Vibration
* Rotor dynamics
* Specification and Performance of Electrical and Mechanical Rotating Equipment
* Stress Analysis of Machine Components
* Vibration Diagnostics of Rotating Machines.

Research project

Individual projects are designed to raise the candidate’s practical experience to a level comparable to that of a professional engineer. Therefore projects deal with real industrial design problems and topics of current
research interest.

Projects may also be suggested by sponsors and undertaken in-house if the work is related to the sponsoring company’s activities. Candidates are assigned an individual project supervisor with whom they hold regular meetings.

Typical types of projects

Assessment

The taught part of the course contributes 50% towards the MSc. This element consists of lectures, assessment exercises and exams which are drawn from all modules. The other 50% of the course comprises the research project and the associated presentations.

Part-time study

This course is also available on a part-time basis for individuals who wish to study whilst remaining in full-time employment. The lecture programme is spread over two to three years and is in a modular format. Typically, up to 5 one-week modules are attended each year at Cranfield.
