In 2005 Cranfield became the first University to offer an MSc program to Aircraft Accident Investigators from around the World, developed from our world class short courses which have run since 1977.
The program covers a wide area of expertise related to safety and accident investigation whilst enabling students to specialise in appropriate subject areas. This flexibility means that you may tailor the course to your particular interests and career aspirations.
Stand out from the crowd
Cranfield is the only wholly postgraduate science, technology and management university in the UK, it is the first choice for ambitious and skilled individuals wishing to enroll on Masters’, Doctorate and professional development programmes. It is one of the top five research-intensive universities in the UK, alongside Oxford, Cambridge and London’s Imperial College. Over 10% of the UK’s engineering and sciences PhDs are awarded by Cranfield. 93% of students go on to relevant work or further study within 6 months of graduation. Our student body of approximately 3800 students is made up of students from over 100 countries with 64% from within the EU and the remaining 36% from outside of the EU. This diverse variety of cultures, when combined with our mix of full and part-time students, ensures a professional, culturally diverse, focused and mature environment in which to study.
Benefit from our reputation
The Safety and Accident Investigation Centre at Cranfield University is world-renowned offering training, research and consultancy services to the global transport industry. Cranfield has remained a centre of excellence for aircraft accident investigation for over thirty years, and the University has a strong portfolio of postgraduate study programmes. All of our courses are focused on real life rather than on pure theory, and are designed to facilitate working with industry partners in a commercial environment.
Structure
The full MSc course is completed over three years and consists of compulsory modules, optional modules and an individual research thesis.
The program commences with attendance on the Aircraft Accident Investigation module, which may be completed as two three-week modules in Fundamentals of Investigation and Applied Aircraft Accident Investigation Techniques.
These two modules have input from a significant number of external presenters who represent the safety and of accident investigation areas, including the UK Air, Marine and Rail Accident Investigation Branches together with safety professionals from manufacturers, operators, the military and government agencies from across the world.
Optional modules
Upon completion of these core modules, students can then specialise in particular areas of investigation by choosing four optional modules (24 options are currently offered, covering core skills, management, engineering, human factors, and specialist techniques) – examples include Safety Management Systems and Safety Assessment of Aircraft Systems.
Research Thesis
In addition to these taught elements, students also complete a supervised research thesis on a subject of their choice within the aircraft accident investigation field. Building on pioneering work in the arena of medical imaging, one of our recent MSc graduates has helped to develop the state of the art with his thesis ‘Using 3D Computed Tomography in Aircraft Accident Investigation.’
