Rheology is an interdisciplinary science concerned with the flow and deformation of matter. It studies processing problems encountered with complex industrial fluids such as plastics, food products, coatings, industrial slurries, etc. The objective of EURHEO – European Master’s in Engineering Rheology – is to offer an advanced education programme on Rheology and its applications to different Engineering areas. It links together fields such as mathematics, physics, chemistry, molecular biology, chemical and mechanical engineering, textile and food technology, etc.

EURHEO combines the expertise of six leading European Universities in the field of Rheology and the syllabus is designed to provide its graduates with the necessary skills to understand the relevance of Rheology in Materials Science and Engineering and to apply the knowledge acquired to solving real-world engineering problems both autonomously and as a member of multidisciplinary research teams.

The EURHEO study programme is tailored individually to the needs of each student. At the K.U.Leuven, the programme is closely linked to the Master of Chemical Engineering. Each EURHEO student has to study at at least two universities in two countries. On completing their studies, students receive multiple degrees from the universities where they have taken courses and training.

Study programme

In the first year you take the Primary Studies Programme at one of the collaborating partner universities, according to your background and selected area. The first year is designed to give you a firm basic education in those different areas of Material Science and Engineering to which Rheology is directly relevant.

The second year consists of an Integrated Study Programme, taken at a different university from the one you attended in the first year. Initially, there will be general courses (the common branch modules) on the main areas of application of Rheology. These will be followed by the advanced topical courses, which are devoted to the in-depth study of particular areas of Rheology that are of interest to each individual student. The fourth semester will be devoted to a final R&TD project (Master’s thesis), which is geared towards scientific or industrial research.

Double degree.

The objective of EURHEO, European Masters in Engineering Rheology, is to offer an advanced education programme on Rheology and its applications to different Engineering areas. EURHEO combines the expertise of seven leading European Universities in the field of Rheology and the syllabus is designed to provide its graduates with the necessary competences to understand the relevance of Rheology in Materials Science and Engineering and apply the knowledge gained in solving real-world Engineering problems both autonomously and included in multidisciplinary research teams.

The Higher Education Institutions involved are the University of Minho (Portugal), Catholic University Leuven (Belgium), catholic University of Louvain (Belgium), University of Huelva (Spain), University of Calabria (Italy), the Grenoble Institute of Technology University Joseph Fourier (France) and the University of Ljubljana (Slovenia). The awarded degree will be a Double Degree from the institutions involved in each students mobility. The admission criteria include a good quality undergraduate degree with a minimum of 180 ECTS credits or equivalent qualifications in relevant areas such as Engineering, Exact Sciences and Natural Sciences

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

Requirements

The basic entry requirement for EURHEO will be a Bachelor (of Science) degree, equivalent to 180 ECTS credits in relevant areas such as Engineering, e.g., Mechanical, Chemical, Exact Sciences, e.g., Physics, Chemistry, and Natural Sciences, e.g. Biology. Applicants have to demonstrate sufficient levels of proficiency in English and in either French or Spanish, if they intend to take the PSP in UCL and INPG/UJF or at UHU, respectively.
- The admission policy is intended to ensure equal opportunity of access to higher education for qualified European and third country students. In general the programme will assess students individually on the basis of their previous academic record, a letter of motivation and the availability of places (in case of student number limitations at some institutions).
Students should have a good command of English, both spoken and written. Applicants are required to demonstrate their proficiency in English, either by proving that some of their previous studies were successfully completed in English, or by submitting the results of a recognized language proficiency test, such as the TOEFL or another equivalent English test.
- A common fee of 6000 Euro for third country students will be charged to cover the tuition fee and/or administrative cost for the universities which host the student and deliver the degree.
The Student selection procedure and approximate timetables will be the following:
" Mid-January - Deadline for 3rd country student applications
" End-January - Initial CV screening by the Scientific Committee
" Mid-February - Web interview and final selection of 3rd country students
" End-February - Application for EU Scholarships for 3rd country students
" Mid-April - Deadline for EU student applications
" End-April - Initial CV screening by the Consortium
" Mid-May - Web interview and final selection of EU students and final definition of Individual Study Plans.
The maximum expected student intake per year is 35, with a maximum of 20 coming from 3rd countries and the remainder from Europe.
The admission criteria and relative weights will be the following:
CV/Prior education - 60%. Examples of factors to be evaluated in this topic will include the original Bachelor (of Science) degrees, their relevance to the field and grades.
Work experience - 15%. Examples of factors to be evaluated in this topic include previous work experience in areas to which Rheology is relevant, both in terms of duration and type of position.
Interview - 25%. This will be a Web interview conducted over the internet by some or all of the members of the Scientific Committee, as it is strongly felt that this is the best way of assessing the real language, cultural and scientific competences of the applicants; some proof of proficiency in English, e.g., TOEFL, however, will be considered an added value and duly recognised.
Direct access:
- Bachelor of Science in de ingenieurswetenschappen, afstudeerrichting chemische technologie
- Bachelor of Science in de ingenieurswetenschappen, afstudeerrichting werktuigkunde / materiaalkunde, met nevenrichting chemische technologie
Admission decisions are based upon evaluation of a complete application file:
- Bachelor of (Science in) Engineering: Chemical Engineering (or equivalent diploma)
Non-native English students are required to submit a TOEFL or IELTS certificate.
