Two disciplines are available within the Master of Science in physics:
* Electrical engineering: You will learn how to use data analysis methods, signal processing methods, and sensor technology, to solve problems within e.g. Earth observation, subsea sensors for oil and gas, machine learning, etc.
* Space physics: Tromsø is in a unique geographical position to study the Aurora Borealis, the upper polar atmosphere, and the solar wind. You may work with data from several ground based instruments (e.g. EISCAT), with numerical modelling, and with laboratory experiments.
Both disciplines offer the opportunity to work theoretically or experimentally with advanced level problems. The programme qualifies for exciting career options within research, development, production, management, and teaching.
The Master´s programme in physics consists of courses of 60 ECTS credits and a research project of 60 ECTS credits.
Courses in signal processing, statistical signal theory and measurement techniques are compulsory in the electrical engineering discipline, if these are not already completed in the Bachelor's degree or similar basis of admission.
Courses in plasma physics and cosmic geophysics are compulsory in the space physics discipline, if these are not already completed in the Bachelor's degree or similar basis of admission.
Optional courses should be determined in collaboration with your supervisor in connection with choice of research topic. An individual special curriculum or project paper may also be part of the degree.
