Location of Georg-August-Universität Göttingen

The Master’s programme in Sustainable International Agriculture (SIA) is a consecutive joint Master study programme of the agricultural faculties of the Georg-August-University of Goettingen and the University of Kassel - Witzenhausen comprising 120 ECTS. All SIA modules are taught in English.
The Master’s programme consists of fifteen modules with 6 ECTS each; a Master’s thesis in the 6th semester with 24 ECTS; colloquium with 6 ECTS.

SIA programme characteristics

* Master of Science; 4 semesters, joint degree from the Universities of Goettingen and Kassel
* Internationality is a key concept of the programme and
* all courses are taught in English

Modules are offered as:

* lectures, seminars, practices, E-Learning, project modules
* day-trips and up to 2-week study tours

Study-cooperation or joint study programmes exist with:

* Talca (Chile; Goettingen)
* Prague (Czech Republic; Witzenhausen)
* Maribor (Slovenia; Witzenhausen)

Contents The study programme is internationally oriented and offers three possibilities for specialization: “International Agribusiness and Rural Development Economics,” “International Organic Agriculture” and “Tropical Agriculture”
I. Specialization in „International Agribusiness and Rural Development Economics“
Three compulsory modules must be taken (18 ECTS): World agricultural markets and trade, Econometrics I, Socioeconomics of rural development and food security. Six mandatory modules (36 ECTS) must be chosen (among these, at least one methodological module). Six elective modules (36 ECTS) are to be chosen (you can also chose elective modules from the list of so far not attended mandatory modules).
II. Specialization in „International Organic Agriculture“
One bridging module and three compulsory modules must be taken (upon application, the bridging module can be skipped if past academic achievements testify the respective knowledge): Soil and plant science (bridging module), Organic livestock farming under temperate and tropical conditions, Organic cropping systems under temperate and (sub)tropical conditions, Applied statistical modelling (24 ECTS). Five mandatory modules (30 ECTS) must be chosen (among these, at least one methodological module). Six elective modules (36 ECTS) are to be chosen (you can also chose elective modules from the list of so far not attended mandatory modules).
III. Specialization in „Tropical Agriculture“
One bridging module and three compulsory modules must be taken (upon application, the bridging module can be skipped if past academic achievements testify the respective knowledge): Soil and plant science (bridging module), Tropical animal husbandry systems, Crops and production systems in the tropics, Applied statistical modelling (24 ECTS). Five mandatory modules (30 ECTS) must be chosen (among these, at least one methodological module). Six elective modules (36 ECTS) are to be chosen (you can also chose elective modules from the list of so far not attended mandatory modules).
Forms of teaching and learning The Master’s programme requires compulsory attendance and uses the following forms of teaching and learning:
Direct contact courses, seminars, internships, excursions, exercises, work groups, E-learning and projects

IELTS

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

Requirements

Applicants whose first language is not English have to prove a good working knowledge of English. Their proficiency in English must be certified in an internationally recognised test. The following tests and levels are accepted:
* Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English at least with grade B
* Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English at least with grade C
* International English language Test System (IELTS) with at least 6 points
* At least 550 points in a paper-based TOEFL (Test of English as a foreign language)
* At least 213 points in a computer-based TOEFL (Test of English as a foreign language)
* At least 80 points in the new internet-based TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)
* UNIcert level III
* C1-certificate of CEF (Common European Framework)
The language test certificate should be no more than 2 years old at the time of application. Exempted from the requirement to provide proof of language proficiency are students with English as first language and students with a one-year study or work experience in an English- speaking country within the last five years.Successful applicants must have received an above-average (minimum is second-class upper division) or, preferably, a good grade in their undergraduate degree (BSc) and must have a good working knowledge of English.
