Education and research in Process Technology is given high priority at Telemark University College (TUC), and there are strong links to the local process industry which is part of the largest industrial cluster in Norway. The local industry includes production of cement, polymers, fertilisers, different industrial gases, solar cell wafers, and metal alloys. In addition to the research activity at TUC, strong industrial research centres are also located in the region. In Norway, offshore acitivty is of high importance, giving an advanced oil and gas industry. The educational and research programmes at TUC focus on onshore as well as offshore acitivities, and the programmes are at high international level. The research networks involve many universities and industrial companies. The M.Sc. programme in Process Teechnology is industrially oriented, with emphasize on applied science and close cooperation with local and regional industrial companies. The main strategic field of technological research at TUC is Gas and Energy Systems, and this programme emphasizes key components of process technology within this field of researc. The following key topics are covered in this M.Sc. programme: Process and reactor design, Process equipment design, Powder treatment and transport, Multiphase flow, Technical safety and prevention of hazards, Fluid flow and analysis including CFD, Membranes, Combustion, Thermodynamics, Separation technology. The programme includes a R&D group project with external partners, project management training and an individual thesis, to be carried out during the final (fourth) semester. Courses also emphasize student participation, with individual and group exercises, and offer the introduction to advanced computer based tools as well as practical laboratory and field work.

Generally speaking, under the Norwegian University and Colleges Act, an accredited full university may establish any academic programme of any duration, at any academic level and within any academic discipline or profession (short-term programmes, bachelor’s degree programmes, master’s degree programmes and Ph.D. programmes).
An accredited university college may establish any undergraduate programme and any bachelor’s degree programme it finds suitable. In addition, a university college may establish selected master’s degree programmes or Ph.D. programmes subject to the accreditation of NOKUT and the final decision of the Ministry of Education. Institutions with an accredited Ph.D. programme, may establish any master’s degree programmes within the subject area covered by this particular Ph.D. programme.
All institutions are required to maintain a system for Quality Assurance in Education, monitored by NOKUT. In addition, NOKUT sets the standards and criteria for the content of any degree programme, and will also regularly review and secure re-accreditation for any regular educational programme (bachelor -ph.d levels).
