The Master in Energy, Natural Resources and the Environment is one of the specialisations within the two-year Master of Science (MSc) programme in Economics and Business Administration at NHH. After finishing the programme you will end up with the title MSc in Economics and Business Administration.

Global opportunities

All MSc students at NHH are encouraged to take at least one semester on exchange at another leading business school elsewhere in the world. Through membership of CEMS (Community of European Management Schools) and PIM (Partnership in International Management) and through bilateral agreements, NHH has exchange partnerships with some of the leading institutions for economics and business administration in the world.
MSc students at NHH can also combine their studies with the CEMS Master's in International Management programme, and qualify with two internationally recognised qualifications. Similarly, NHH offers a Double Degree programme with selected partner schools.

Career opportunities

NHH graduates are highly sought after in the labour market. In addition to their own efforts, students are supported by the students welfare association (SiB), the student organisation (NHHS) and the school when preparing and searching for career opportunities.
Our most recent surveys indicate that the unemployment rate for NHH graduates in 2009 was less than 5% six months after graduation, and average graduate salary ranks amongst the best for masters programmes in Europe. Furthermore, these surveys show particular success among NHH’s international students with respondents obtaining an average annual salary in excess of €50,000 (excluding bonuses).

Flexible programme structure

The Energy, Natural Resources and the Environment programme has the following general structure. It consists of twelve courses and a thesis. Students select six courses that relate directly to the Energy, Natural Resources and the Environment specialisation and the remaining six are elective courses. Four of these elective courses can be combined to make a minor specialisation. The programme is wholly taught in English.

  • Programme start: mid August
  • Programme duration: four semesters (two years)

Contents

The Energy, Natural Resources and the Environment (ENE) profile is one of three specialisations within the MSc in Economics and Business Administration programme at NHH, which is wholly taught in English.

  • Programme start: mid August
  • Typical programme duration: four semesters (two years)

The general structure of the ENE programme consists of 12 courses and a thesis. Together these add up to a total of 120 ECTS credits: 90 credits for the 12 courses, and 30 credits for the thesis.

The ENE profile may combine courses from various fields of specialisation to create a full degree programme. The general course plan for the ENE degree comprises:

  • Six major courses from within the ENE specialisation
  • Six elective courses from amongst all the MSc specialisations at NHH: Business Analysis and Performance Management; Economic Analysis; Economics; Energy, Natural Resources and the Environment; Financial Economics; International Business; Marketing and Industrial Economics; and Strategy and Management
  • Thesis

Major Courses

The six major courses include four core courses which cover the main issues within the areas studied and form the foundation of the programme. Students select at least one methodological core course out of a choice of six:

  • Social science research methods
  • Econometrics
  • Time Series Analysis
  • Economic Decision Models
  • Empirical Analyses of Finance and resource Markets
  • Optimisation and microeconomics

The remaining core courses are chosen from the following list, depending on your sub-specialisation in the profile:

  • Financial aspects of energy and commodity markets
  • Design and Operation of Deregulated Electricity Markets
  • Petroleum and Natural Gas Economics
  • Alternative Energy Sources in Physical, Environmental and Economical Perspectives
  • Environmental Economics
  • Economics of Climate Change
  • International Fisheries Management
  • Land Use and Natural Resources
  • The Energy Resources and Environmental Industrial Sector

In addition, a series of three seminars may be counted as a core course where a single seminar counts as 1/3 of a regular course. Each seminar focuses on specific topics of interest within the field of energy, natural resources and the environment. Examples of seminar topics are: Ethics and corporate governance in the energy sector; Political aspects of energy, natural resources, and environmental issues; Operational risk in the energy sector; and Environmental accounting and carbon trading. One seminar can be replaced by an internship of duration of one month at a company whose main activities are in ENE sectors.

Elective Courses

In addition to the core ENE courses, NHH offers a wide range of elective courses that can be combined with the ENE major. It is recommended that four of the (six) elective courses be taken from the same field to enable a minor specialisation.

Instead of a minor specialisation at NHH, MSc students may opt to go on international exchange for a semester. In this instance, the minor specialisation will be built up out of elective courses undertaken at the overseas school.

In addition, students may also apply for the Double Degree or CEMS Master's in International Management (MIM) programme once they are at NHH, and combine their studies to graduate with two internationally recognised degree qualifications.

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
