A ship is a very complex organism. Various systems act in concert to perform the different tasks a ship may be designed to carry out. Aalesund University College is situated in the middle of the world's largest maritime cluster, and you will benefit from international and regional expertise. It is a great engineering challenge to design new ship systems that can turn shipping into the most efficient, safe and environmentally friendly means of transportation in the future. New ship design is typically developed in response to needs coming from new technologies, changes in the world politics, new strategies and lessons learned from previous ship development.
The programme focuses on the design of ships for demanding marine operations. A well-behaving ship is crucial in performing the complex operations necessary to support the installation of subsea field equipment. Simulation of the vessel behaviour can be used to plan the operation, to identify potential risks, to train the operative personnel, and to optimize the ship design for unique operations. The study is closely linked to the University College's R&D activities on simulation of vessel behaviour and marine operations.
In particular, the emphasis of the programme is placed on the structural integrity of the hull and the hydrodynamic performance of the vessel. A thorough theoretical understanding in these fields is essential in exploiting the possibilities of the modern computer tools for analysis and simulation. During the second semester you choose one of two majors: Ship Structural Design or Computational Fluid Dynamics.
The programme focuses on the design of ships -equipment and maritime systems. As a graduate of our programme you can look forward to work with challenges connected to developing automated and remotely controlled deck solutions as well as new machinery and propulsion systems to meet both the strict economic requirements and the environmental goals aiming for zero emission. Innovative use of materials and developing equipment working in challenging environments, with below zero temperatures in northern regions and several thousand meters below the surface of the ocean in Brazil, are other examples of advanced maritime operations to be carried out in near future.
The first year (full time study) is made up of 5 subjects (where 1 of the subjects should be chosen between two alternatives) and 8 "Best Practice"-modules. Each subject is scheduled for a given day of the week. This scheduling makes part time study possible. Each module is taught intensively over a one week period.
The second year includes more specialized studies, including projects and a master thesis. Much of the programme is linked to industrial issues.
For part time study, please look at the study plan.
Lectures, individual- and group exercises, project work and laboratory assignments.
Modules ("Best Practice Modules") are taught by teams involved in maritime operations. The modules are one-week, intensive courses, which all are a part of a post qualifying education.
Part time study programs provide unique opportunities for combining theory and practice. Students who are employed can also link problems or projects relevant to their company to the theoretical consepts in the course.
