Demography is the scientific study of human populations. The main task of demography is to describe and analyse population development in various social contexts and time periods as well as to investigate causes and consequences of changing population structures (i.e. variations in the distribution of people across different ages and the proportions of men and women).
Demographic knowledge is essential for social planning and for understanding how a society functions. Both the developed and the developing world, and historical as well as recent times are of interest for demography.Fertility, mortality and migration, the three fundamental processes that produce and change populations, can be studied from different disciplinary perspectives (e.g. economics, geography, sociology, history, statistics, political science).
The interdisciplinary character of demography is built into the master´s programme in demography, a collaboration among the departments of (in alphabetical order) economics, economic history, human geography, sociology and statistics. The aim of the programme is to prepare students for demographic research careers at an advanced level. Students will learn to describe and analyse population development in various social contexts and time periods.
The programme consists of a 30-credits thesis (to be written in demography or in a field of the participating departments with specialization in demography) and 90 credits course work, of which 30 credits to be obtained in methodology. About one-third of the total credits are to be taken in demography.
The two-year program consists of four parts, or modules. Not all courses in a module need be taken in sequence and modules can sometimes overlap with each other in time.
The first module consists of Demography courses, which are compulsory for all students. This module makes up about one-third of the programme, 37.5 ECTS credits, with two of the five courses focusing on demographic methods. The module also includes a course for preparing a short master´s thesis proposal to be submitted at the end of the second semester.
The second module includes courses in the department within which field one chooses to write the master´s thesis with specialization in Demography (among those listed above). Students may as well choose to write the master´s thesis directly in Demography in which case courses in the second module are selected in consultation with the thesis supervisor. This module also equals about one-third of the program, 37.5 credits, of which at least 7.5 credits should be in research methods. In total, at least 30 credits of the Master´s Program are to be taken in research methods and analytical techniques.
The third module includes courses in other disciplines, in most cases provided by the departments that participate in the Master´s Program.
The fourth and last module is the 30-credit master's thesis, equalling one semester of full-time study. The thesis is expected to be written in Demography or in a field of the participating department with specialization in demography. In the latter case, the main supervisor will have expertise in the main field of the thesis, but there is also a demography co-supervisor.
