Location of University of Groningen

The EMCL is a full-time interdisciplinary and transnational university programme at Master´s level providing integrated training in theoretical and experimental neurosciences and psycholinguistics with clinical issues. The aim of the Master´s programme is to train highly qualified advanced students who are excellently prepared for research work and PhD programmes in the field of clinical linguistics. After finishing the programme, students have fundamental knowledge of theoretical linguistics and neurolinguistics. Students have thorough knowledge of speech and language disorders and basic knowledge of how to design a neuro-imaging study.

EMCL students will acquire competences in identifying and describing developmental and acquired language disorders, formulating relevant research questions, designing appropriate experiments to test speech and the language abilities of language-impaired children and adults and be able to write an essay to research paper quality.

The transnational consortium offering this Master´s programme comprises three universities: the University of Groningen, the Netherlands; Universität Potsdam, Germany and Joensuun Yliopisto, Finland. During the programme, EMCL students study at least at two of the above-mentioned universities. Students will be awarded a double degree until a joint consortium degree is recognized by all the countries in the consortium. The programme recruits students worldwide.

The programme is highly relevant for students who wish to pursue a career in speech and language therapy, clinical linguistics or scientific research. Speech and Language therapists who follow this programme will be better equipped to assess and treat persons with a language impairment because of the additional knowledge they acquire about the theoretical background of the disorders they are dealing with. Students with a background in linguistics or psychology will become acquainted with the clinical situation, and thus will be able to develop better assessment and treatment materials. EMCL is an excellent preparation for a PhD in neurolinguistics. The programme is not meant to train students to become speech or language therapists.

All students are together in Potsdam in the second semester (April-September, 30 ECTS). Classes will be on Neurological rehabilitation, Methods/Statistics, Language Development, Language Processing, Language Assessment and Topics in Neurolinguistics. Another focus is on Scientific Writing.

Mobility in the third semester (October-March, 30 ECTS)takes the students to Groningen or Joensuu. Classes will be similar to the first term but on an advanced level. A new focus is on Brain imaging and Language.

Cultural and language courses

Apart from the scientific content of the program, cultural and language courses are an obligatory part in each teaching semester. Students are invited to learn the language of their host institution, get an idea of the cultural diversity in Europe and acquire skills in intercultural competence.
