Crime is of all times and all places. But the nature of crimes changes over time. More options are available to people as technology evolves and travelling the entire world gets more and more easy. Different legal regimes are dealing with problems in a different or sometimes very similar way. And countries have to work together more and more when fighting crime. Therefore, the Faculty of Law of the University of Groningen offers an LLM programme in Criminal Law and Criminology, which enables students to specialize in criminal law matters, both national and international, but also teaches them about several aspects of criminology.
The programme consists of six courses (encompassing a broad choice of topics), a seminar and the writing of a thesis. The language of instruction and examination is English.
The Netherlands, as host state to The Hague, the legal capital of the world, is a perfect place for students to be receiving high quality education about criminal law. This is all conducted in a friendly international atmosphere and an international staff offers an excellent basis for a rewarding and stimulating year in an outward-looking and research-led environment.
Career prospects
The programme is designed to equip its graduates for a legal career within internationally operating organizations in the field of criminal law and criminology. It also is suitable for graduates that wish to work in national or international criminal courts or services. The course descriptions are categorised according to the schedule of courses:
