Artificial Intelligence focuses on designing and implementing intelligent systems. Main themes are autonomous perceptive systems (perceiving robots), cognitive robotics (interacting robots) and multi agent systems (for example software agents).
Autonomous systems are systems that can operate and carry out missions indepently. For example robots driving around on the moon collecting information. Even in unpredictable surroundings these robots respond with a certain intelligence and take decisions about what to do. In Groningen we concentrate on autonomous perceptive systems, for example robots finding a sign in an unknown environment and having to read that sign.
Cognitive robotics is also a major theme in the master´s programme Artificial Intelligence in Groningen . The subjects taught are highly connected to the research on social robotics at our research department: the origin of communication and recognizing movements of other robots. Examples of research topics are getting one AIBO (robot dog) to recognize another AIBO or trying to find out how robots can interact with humans and learn from that interaction.
An example of multi-agent systems is a team of robots playing soccer. These robots have to communicate and cooperate with each other. In the process of designing these types of intelligent systems knowledge about thinking and acting of humans and animals is necessary. This knowledge is provided in the master´s programme, combined with techniques from computer science and logic.
Once you have obtained your Master´s degree in Artificial Intelligence, you can apply your skills in a Industrial research & development, for instance air traffic and space labs, where you make sure that intelligent and innovative technologies are used during the design process. You could also choose to get a job at a research institute where you work as a researcher. This can be done at a university (PhD studentship)or at a research institute like TNO. About 50% of our students choose a career as a scientist, mostly as PhD student.
In the Master´s programme Artificial Intelligence at the University of Groningen there is a specific emphasis on the understanding of natural cognition. We want to explore and understand the behaviour of humans and animals by simulating it in robots and computer simulations. The emphasis here is on the more `complicated´ forms of cognition, like cooperation, communication, social interaction and predictive perception.
The Master´s programme Artificial Intelligence has a two-year program. The Master´s programme is part of the School of Computing and Cognition. The programme consists of six compulsory core modules (30 ECTS), optional modules (45 ECTS) and a Master´s thesis (45 ECTS).
Within the Master´s programme Artificial Intelligence there are two main themes: Autonomous Perceptive Systems and Multi-Agent Systems. In the study programme there is a theoretical as well as an applied approach to these two themes.
Compulsory Modules
The compulsory modules of the Master´s programme are: Capita Selecta Artificial Intelligence, Perception, Machine Learning, Research Skills, Robotics and Multi-Agent Systems. The compulsory modules cover about half a year of the whole programme. The remaining time is spent on optional modules and the Master´s thesis.
Optional ModulesSome of the optional modules are: Cognitive Robotics, Language Modelling, Self-Organization in Biological Systems, Computer Vision, Pattern Recognition and sound Recognition. Using the optional modules you can choose to specialize in one of the two main themes or choose your own specialization. Through the optional modules you decided whether to take a more theoretical approach or an applied approach.
Master's thesis
The Master´s thesis at the end of the programme covers three quarters of a year. In this project you work on your own research project. The choice of subject is up to you. To give you an impression of the broad range of subjects you can choose in the Master´s programme Artificial Intelligence at the University of Groningen, here is a list of some titles of Master´s theses:
* o Self-organization in groups of penguins
* o Simulation of co-evolutions in robot crickets
* o Modelling of crowds
* o Strategy evolution in Diplomacy

* A Bachelor´s degree in the field of Artificial Intelligence providing you have completed certain specific courses such as Variance Analysis during your Bachelor´s programme
* If you have a Bachelor´s degree from a different field the Admissions Board will decide whether you can be admitted to the Master´s degree programme. In the admission procedure we will check if your Bachelor´s degree gives you sufficient foreknowledge to get to the level of a Bachelor´s degree Artificial Intelligence within six months.
* Sufficient English proficiency: IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 580/237/92
