Can you cure diseases with embryonic stem cells? What can be done about obesity and type 2 diabetes? Why does one persone becomes depressed but another doesn't? If you are interested in questions like these, then the Master Biomedical Sciences (BMS) is a place for you.

The Master´s degree programme in Biomedical Sciences is strongly oriented towards the scientific background to health and disease. A great deal of attention is paid to preclinical research - what are the causes of all kinds of diseases, what are the underlying mechanisms, what is the role of the brain, etc. The field is wide and the choice is up to you - you can specialize in molecular biology or conduct research at the level of population groups (epidemiology). You are participating actively in all aspects of the research, from designing an experiment to conducting it, and to writing an international scientific publication.

Most biomedical scientists work as researchers at a university or research institute. Biomedical scientists are also very well represented in the pharmaceutical industry, the food industry and social organizations such as the Heart Foundation, the Diabetes Fund and in advisory positions in government. There are also many opportunities in the field of education, particularly at university level.

Contents

The two-year programme in Biomedical Sciences is taught by enthusiastic staffmembers who are very experienced in Biomedical Sciences research both from the Department of Medical Sciences and the Department of Biology.

In the first year you will conduct an independent research project lasting at least 6 months. During the second year, you can choose between a second research project or an internship at a company or social organization. A thesis and a colloquium are compulsary parts of the programme.

The two year programme can either be totally devoted to research (research variant) or be orientated to management and policy next to research (management & policy). In the latter, a number of courses are open for Dutch speaking students only.
