The MLitt in English Linguistics for Advanced Teachers of English (ELATE) has been designed for students who are advanced teachers of English as a second/foreign language and who are interested in advancing their knowledge of the patterns, structures and varieties of English, and in undergoing intensive practice in their productive skills in the language.
The degree is designed to train students who wish to proceed to PhD research, but is also useful as a stand-alone Masters degree for students with a general interest in advancing their knowledge of the English language and its teaching.
Students can take this programme as a diploma, a stand-alone one-year or two-year part-time Masters degree (but immigration regulations prevent an overseas student from studying part-time), or as a first step towards a MPhil or PhD (subject to admission to a further degree programme either at Aberdeen or elsewhere).

Contents

The MLitt in ELATE is designed around the expertise of members of staff to address the needs of teachers of English as a second/foreign language. It provides training in research methods and linguistic analysis, and aims to advance students' knowledge of the phonological, morphological and syntactic structures of English. Elective courses feature discussion of current debate on varieties of English from both historical and contemporary perspectives. Intensive practice in writing and analysing academic English for non-native speakers complements the practical oral component of the degree programme. The School of Language & Literature offers excellent facilities for field-work training and a state-of-the-art Phonetics Laboratory for data analysis.

Assessment methods vary by individual course, and include essays, reports, presentations, written exercises, oral tests, and examinations. The MLitt also requires a 15,000 word dissertation, while the diploma consists of coursework alone.

Requirements

The standard entrance requirement is a good first degree in English, normally at a 2(i) level or at a level deemed equivalent. Students whose first language is not English need to have a minimum of IELTS at 6.5 (writing band 6.0), or TOEFL at 580/237/92. Previous study of language and linguistics is also desirable. Applicants with non-standard qualifications will also be considered, though it is anticipated that the vast majority of students will be recent graduates from Britain or overseas with above-average competence in English language.
