The core programme areas are: educational modernisation in the Muslim world, specific educational challenges facing the Muslim diaspora in Europe, and British Muslims.
Issues covered include: faith-based schooling; under-achievement of Muslim children, the educational needs of Muslim children in the mainstream educational system; and developing educational intervention programmes to tackle religious extremism among British Muslims.

Core courses include:
Educational Studies: An Introduction
Core Sources & Approaches in the Study of Islam & Muslims
Islamic Education: Theory & Practice
Postgraduate Research Methods
Candidates are also required to take two further elective courses from those available at the Institute, and write a dissertation on a topic related to the subject matter of the degree. Each student is appointed a supervisor who will assist in planning the period of study in a way that is appropriate to the qualifications and interests of the student. Students are also expected to attend the postgraduate research seminars organised by the Institute.
The taught courses will be assessed by coursework, as prescribed for each course. The dissertation course will be assessed by submission of the dissertation. The degree of MLitt shall not be awarded to candidates who fail to complete the dissertation to an appropriate standard, irrespective of their performance in other courses; such candidates may, at the discretion of the Examiners, be awarded a Postgraduate Diploma.
IELTS
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

Normally a good second-class Honours degree in a relevant subject, or its equivalent. Students whose mother tongue is not English require an IELTS score of 6.5 or higher.
