The course provides an innovative and distinctive programme of study on Islam and Muslims, taking an approach which is post-orientalist, post-traditionalist, multicultural, and interdisciplinary. The programme includes courses on core texts and sources of Islam, along with examination of Muslim cultures, societies, and civilisations and the changes affecting the Muslim world in terms of politics, economics, society and particular global and local issues. The programme may be taken either as an end in itself or as an appropriate preparation for postgraduate research.

Islam and Muslims in History and Society
Core Sources and Approaches in the Study of Islam and Muslims
Postgraduate Research Methods in the Study of Islam and Muslims
Islam and the West: Multiculturalism, Globalisation, and Muslims
Candidates are also required to take two further elective courses from those available at the Institute, and write a dissertation on a topic related to the subject matter of the degree. Each student is appointed a supervisor who will assist in planning the period of study in a way that is appropriate to the qualifications and interests of the student. Students are also expected to attend the postgraduate research seminars organised by the Institute.
The taught courses will be assessed by coursework, as prescribed for each course. The dissertation course will be assessed by submission of the dissertation. The degree of MLitt shall not be awarded to candidates who fail to complete the dissertation to an appropriate standard, irrespective of their performance in other courses; such candidates may, at the discretion of the Examiners, be awarded a Postgraduate Diploma
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.

Take testNormally a good second-class Honours degree in a relevant subject, or its equivalent. Students whose mother tongue is not English require an IELTS score of 6.5 or higher.
