Location of London Metropolitan University

The course has been designed for recent graduates and mature candidates currently working in industry or academia, who want to improve or update previous computing knowledge or experience in subjects such as programming, databases and Web design. It is an academically challenging programme which provides exposure to a variety of software systems and latest technologies widely used in industry. For those students who have no substantial background in computing, there is a pre-Masters course, the Graduate Certificate in Computing, that will lead to the MSc.

Course structure

The MSc is awarded to students completing four core (compulsory) modules, two optional modules and a project. Those completing the taught modules but not attempting or passing the project can be awarded a Postgraduate Diploma. A Postgraduate Certificate can be awarded to those who complete any three taught modules.
The course is divided into three stages:
Stage 1: three core modules:

* Internet Application Design and Development
* Object-Oriented Design and Development
* Relational and Object-Oriented Database Concepts and Applications

Stage 2: one core module and two optional modules (subject to change)

Compulsory module:

* Research Methods and Project Management

Optional modules:

* Enterprise Information System Design
* Data Mining and Data Warehousing
* Distributed Database Systems
* Information System Architecting
* Information Security for Enterprise Systems
* Software Project Management
* Independent Learning in Computing

Stage 3: Computing Project

Assessment



Assessment is by a mixture of coursework and examinations. The project is assessed by means of a project report of between 15,000 and 20,000 words and a viva voce examination/presentation.

Requirements

The standard entry requirement is a good honours degree from a UK university or its equivalent, in a subject which includes significant amounts of computing.

The course assumes competence in

* Object-Oriented programming and design, with a knowledge of Java or C .
* Database design and implementation, with a good knowledge of SQL.
* Internet applications development

Applicants who do not have this background should consider studying appropriate modules from the Graduate Certificate in Computing as a preparation for the MSc. Additionally, applicants with a good honours degree which does not include computing will be considered for the Graduate Certificate. The Graduate Certificate and MSc have been designed as a continuous programme, and those completing the Graduate Certificate with a good level of achievement will be offered places on the MSc. If English is not your first language, you need an IELTS score of at least 6.0, a TOEFL score of at least 600 or a TOEFL on-line test score of 250 or above.
