Aims of the course
The information profession is in a period of rapid change. New information and communications technologies have revolutionised the production, storage, retrieval and exploitation of information. The management of information services and the formulation of information policies have been correspondingly re-evaluated.
Accredited by the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals, this course combines the theoretical and practical elements necessary to build a career in the information profession, with a focus on information management.
Work placements are a compulsory and integral part of the course for all full-time students. Placement hosts include public and academic libraries, charitable organisations, law firms, private companies, government departments and media organisations.
Careers
Graduates are equipped for a range of careers in the information profession, with a focus on information management, or alternatively can progress to further study.
Course contents
There are four core modules:
* Information Architecture: Modification of Outcomes and Assessment
* Information Society: Modification of Outcomes and Assessment
* Information Services Management
* Applied Information Research
Optional modules include:
* Cataloguing and Classification
* Managing Digital Resources
* Design for the Internet
* E-Solutions and Digital Media Applications
* Knowledge, Culture and Change
* Knowledge Applications and Technologies
One option can be taken as a free option from another Masters course in the University.
Dissertation
You will be required to produce a dissertation of 12,000-15,000 words on a topic of relevance to Information Management.
Assessment
The form of assessment will vary according to the aims and objectives of each module. Examples include examinations, essays, reports, computer projects and presentations.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

Normally a good Honours degree (2:2 or above) or equivalent, and at least 6 months of relevant work experience. Exceptionally, applicants without an Honours degree but with substantial experience of information work at middle or senior level will be accepted.
Full-time students are expected to have had experience of at least six months in information work, though exceptionally this requirement can be waived. Part-time students are expected to be working in an information organisation, or to have had experience of such work.
