The course is designed to meet a new and rapidly growing demand for specialists in IT security. With the recent, well-documented rises in cybercrime and the increasingly sophisticated systems that are being developed to counteract this, investing in quality IT security measures has become a high priority for today's industries and organisations.

The course is designed in particular for those who wish to specialise in the development and implementation of IT security systems to assess faults and risks in computer environments, and for those wanting to equip themselves for senior positions in industry with responsibility for IT-based security.

The course is designed to develop your self-awareness, enhance your performance in a variety of contexts, and make you aware of the ethical and creative considerations in this field. Successful graduates should have the theoretical knowledge and practical skills needed to pursue careers as IT security professionals in a wide range of industries and organisations.

Career opportunities

IT security is a fast growing area, which is expected to grow even faster in the foreseeable future, resulting in a large demand from industry for qualified security specialists. The course is intended as a foundation for both a professional career and postgraduate research in IT security. On successful completion, graduates are expected to find employment in both industry and commerce as security experts. Typical career opportunities might include security analysis, countering computer crime and senior positions with responsibility for IT-based security in an organisation, to name just a few. Examples of job titles may include:

Course structure

The course consists of six essential modules and a dissertation of 15,000 -20,000 words. The modules include:

* Network Standards and Protocols
* Network Security
* Cryptography
* Security Management
* Computer Forensics
* Research and Development Skills

Assessment



A range of assessment methods are used including written reports, software projects and examination.

Requirements

The minimum entry requirement will normally be a lower second class honours degree, which should be in computing or a computing-related subject.

Applicants will also be considered who have a relevant professional qualification and/or extensive relevant professional experience in an IT-related environment.
