Location of Brunel University

The MSc in Psychology, Health, and Behaviour is designed for students who do not wish to become UK Chartered Health Psychologists and so is particularly attractive to international students and health professionals, such as, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, pharmacists, medical doctors, and many more. It seeks to help the student understand health and illness, and provides knowledge and research skills applicable to the health arena.

Course Aims

  • How can we change risky health behaviours (such as smoking, drinking)?
  • Why don´t people take medicines as directed, even when the medicines are prescribed for serious illnesses?
  • What psychological and social factors influence physical health?

This course is aimed at a variety of graduates; people working in the health professions who wish to further their understanding of the psychological aspects of health and illness; international students who do not fulfil the British Psychological Society´s registration requirements; UK psychology graduates who wish to gain skills to help them obtain a place on a Clinical Psychology Doctorate or study further at PhD level; and graduates in related disciplines such as sociology and anthropology.

Careers

The MSc in Psychology, Health, and Behaviour will be a valuable precursor to any future research degree or clinical doctorate. Skills learnt on this course will also benefit those working within health and illness who wish to further their careers.


Contents

The course consists of four taught modules (30 credits each) and a final dissertation (60 credits) totalling 180 credits. Modules are subject to variation but at the time of printing, planned modules are as follows:

Understanding Health

This module introduces various theoretical models and their relationship to health behaviours. These are related to health behaviours which include smoking, dieting and eating; sexual behaviour; alcohol and substance use; exercise and health promotion.

The Psychology of Managing Illness

This module introduces various factors associated with chronic illness. This includes stress and coping with chronic illness; the role of social support and social comparison in chronic illness, and adherence to treatment, doctor-patient communication and satisfaction.

Multidisciplinary Approaches to Health

This module introduces themes and disciplines that are related to health psychology. This includes medical sociology, medical anthropology, cross-cultural psychology and medical ethics.

Health Research and Research Methods

This module trains students to write literature reviews and discusses the practicalities of research. Students will be trained in qualitative and quantitative research methods.

Dissertation

Students will undertake a research project in a topic of their interest, chosen after discussion with their supervisor.

Assessment

Assessment is by coursework (including term papers and oral presentations), and a dissertation of up to 15,000 words.

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

Requirements

A first class or upper second class honours degree from a UK institution (or its equivalent) and a satisfactory interview.

The degree should normally be in either behavioral medicine areas (eg nurses; physiotherapists; pharmacists; occupational therapists; doctors) or in the social sciences (eg psychology; anthropology; or sociology). Candidates with a lower second class honours degree or non-standard qualifications will be considered in a case-by-case manner.

Students who are non-native speakers of English must also demonstrate that their English language ability is sufficient before starting the course. We require non-native speakers of English to have achieved at least 6.5 overall in the IELTS with no less than 6 in any one component or an equivalent English Language qualification.

Funding details

The Brunel International Scholarship

The Brunel International Scholarship is an annual award scheme designed to promote talent and encourage excellence in scholars coming to Brunel from around the globe. For 2010/11, 35 awards of either £3,000 or £2,000 are available to both undergraduate and postgraduate students who have been offered a place on a full-time course at Brunel.

All applications must be submitted online before 26 May 2010.

Bursaries

Bursaries may be available from your School, and your course director once you have secured and accepted a place on a course for information on any funding opportunities.

  • A limited number of part-scholarships of £1,500 are available for the MA programmes in Music and Drama. Details will be sent to candidates who have confirmed their intention to study at Brunel in the 2010/11 academic year.
  • The Leaders of Tomorrow PhD Bursary in Human Centred Design is supported by a donation from Brunel graduate and philanthropist Peter Ilori. The bursary provides £5,000 of financial support towards the study fees of high-achieving graduates who wish to pursue a PhD in Human Centred Design. Selection is based on the quality of applicants´ PhD study proposal.

Extra-curricular scholarships

Extra-curricular scholarships do not cover living costs or tuition fees. They are available to both taught and research students.

A number of Music Awards to help cover music tuition costs are made each year to students who are not studying music performance as part of their academic course.

The Brunel Sports Scholarship helps elite performance athletes by supporting their academic study and sporting needs simultaneously.
