This programme aims to develop your interest in, and knowledge and understanding of, the archaeology and anthropology of 20th-century conflict. The programme examines the origins and legacy of conflict in both a national and an international setting. It also introduces conceptual, theoretical and critical approaches to the broadly defined field of conflict-related archaeological material, ranging from small personal items (talismans, souvenirs, trophies) to wider issues such as the formation and survival of whole conflict landscapes, seascapes and airscapes (e.g. the Western Front, the Atlantic Wall, Hiroshima, Bosnia and Iraq), and the range of post-conflict commemorative materialities, such as war memorials, museums, and the burgeoning fields of cultural tourism and media coverage. Methodological issues in archaeological, anthropological and historical research and the presentation of conflict-related heritage are also introduced.
You must obtain 180 credit points, of which 120 are taught units (including the option of a six-week placement with an archaeological or museum-based organisation) and 60 credits from a 15,000-word dissertation. All units are assessed by coursework.
