Your Way to the Top in Research in Business and Management

ERIM Master of Philosophy in Business Research (ERIM Research Master) is an integral part of a 5-year ERIM Doctoral Programme in Business and Management, which is being offered by the Erasmus Research Institute of Management (ERIM). ERIM offers five specialisation tracks within its doctoral (and/or research master) programme:

  • Finance & Accounting
  • Business Processes, Logistics and Information Systems
  • Marketing
  • Organisation
  • Strategy & Entrepreneurship

ERIM Research Master is specifically designed for academically talented and motivated students who would like to combine education in a specialisation of their choice with undertaking research in that field. With no more than 30 fellow students, this programme offers individual supervision, highly personal approach and the opportunity to research the chosen subject in great depth. The amount and composition of the course work depends on the candidate’s specific educational background and individual profile. The entire programme is taught in English by some of the most distinguished management research academics in the world. It provides the perfect preparation for a PhD in either Management or Business, or for a research position in the wider world of business.

Programme Overview

The ERIM Master of Philosophy in Business Research is a two-year international research master. The overall focus of the programme is the development of academic competencies and skills at a personal level. The maximum admission of thirty students a year facilitates both customization of the programme and individual supervision, thus enabling a personal approach for the research master programme in comparison to other Master programmes.

Through its position within the research school, the ERIM Master of Philosophy in Business Research programme is embedded in an academic research environment of an excellent level and international standing. The programme contains many mechanisms whereby students can develop their knowledge through the interaction with ERIM members. Only ERIM members with an outstanding performance are allowed to teach on the ERIM Master of Philosophy in Business Research programme. In addition, throughout the programme, students are stimulated to engage in research activities and research interactions with ERIM members. Students are also offered research assistantships that enable them to participate actively in research projects with ERIM members, not merely as typical student assistants but as true collaborators.

Students participating in the ERIM Master of Philosophy in Business Research choose one of five domains of management: Business Processes, Logistics & Information Systems, Organisation, Marketing, Finance & Accounting, and Strategy & Entrepreneurship.

In the first year students follow courses on research methodology and methods, courses in management foundations, and courses in their chosen specialisation domain. In the second year students choose from a number of advanced courses on methodology and advanced (research) courses in the specialisation domain. Furthermore, ERIM research master students receive skills training (presentation skills, publishing skills, academic writing skills etc.) and actively participate in research seminars, together with ERIM faculty and visiting professors and fellows. The programme is concluded with a scientific thesis, combined with a research proposal. The research master curriculum is presented in more detail in the next section.

The programme builds on a university Bachelor degree and has the objective to offer students a thorough training in research methodology, methods and techniques, as well as training in the chosen field of expertise, required for a successful continuation in the PhD stage of the Graduate programme.

Contents

First Year (60 ECTS)

Foundations of Research in Management (9 ects)

In these courses the basic foundations of management, behavioural theories and economics are being discussed.

Research Methodology and Research Methods (21 ects)

The aim of these courses is to familiarise the doctoral students with research methodologies and applications in the domain of management research. Methodology makes explicit the scientific frame in which research is conducted; scientific rules which have to be adhered to in executing research. Three of the seven ERIM methodology courses are compulsory for all students, others depend on one’s specialization track, background and interests,

Seminars and Skills (10 ects)

A distinctive feature of the ERIM Master of Philosophy Business Research is that students are confronted with recent academic work in the field of management by participating in the ERIM research seminar series and workshops. This allows students to meet with international scholars and also to interact and discuss with ERIM researchers and PhD students. Seminars are scheduled throughout the year. Also, students receive training in skills that are particularly useful for setting up, writing, presenting and publishing academic work. Further, a number of other skill courses/workshops is offered every year, that are not obligatory.

Courses in the Domain of Specialisation (20 ects)

Students have to follow at least 20 ects of specialization courses in their field. Each track has its own list of compulsory courses. In some cases students can choose from a range of compulsory courses depending on one’s interests. There are also optional specialization courses that students may follow. To stress the nature of the research master and to familiarize ERIM students with setting up their own research, the specialization courses include a compulsory Research Clinic of 4 ects.

Second Year (60 ECTS)

Advanced Courses (30 ects)

In the second year students take up to 30 ECTS of advanced courses. These courses are taken from a large and diverse set of courses offered by the ERIM or can be taken from programmes of national and international research networks (e.g. LNMB, NOBEM, EIASM, EDEN), with approval of the Director of Doctoral Education. Two types of advanced courses are offered by ERIM: advanced specialisation courses and advanced methodology courses. Students choose at least 10 ECTS of both types (in total, at least 20 ECTS) and the remaining 10 ECTS can be taken from either type.

Research Proposal Writing (5 ects) and Research Master Thesis (30 ects)

The goal of Research Proposal Writing course is two-fold; it aims both at writing a research proposal and at improving skills to obtain external funding for research projects (such as NWO and ERC).

The research master students conclude their two-year study with writing a scientific master thesis in the last half year of the programme. The thesis should introduce and describe the results of a personal and individual research project conducted by the student, and should be written following academic standards consistent with the relevant international literature in the field. The thesis, written in English, should provide a clear proof that the student is familiar with the current scientific literature on his or her topic, and is able to relate his/her manuscript to existing work. Furthermore, the relevance and appropriateness of the applied research methodology and methods should be convincingly explained. The setup and style of the research master’s thesis should satisfy the international academic standards in the field. Ideally, the thesis provides a first version of a manuscript that can be published in a refereed international journal. The thesis is supervised by one of the (senior) members of the ERIM faculty.

Funding details

The estimated costs of living in the Netherlands for students are around € 10000 per year. Applicants from outside the European Economic Area (EEA) may apply for a subsistance allowance.

ERIM offers a limited amount of subsistance allowances to the very best non-EEA applicants. The subsistence allowance is sufficient to cover the costs of living in the Netherlands for 1 year (€10000 ). Students who would like to apply for this subsistance allowance have to submit a written scholarship application with the rest of their application package. Scholarship application should include a motivation letter and a financial statement prooving the need for financial support. For more information please contact the ERIM Doctoral Office.

Furthermore, ERIM also offers a reduced tuition fee to several exellent non-EEA students. This means that instead of paying € 15,500 per year for tuition fee, one pays € 1,771 instead. The decision on granting the reduced tuition fee is made after the application package has been reviewed and applicant has been accepted.

In their second year, ERIM Research Master students can aply for the Personal Research Assistantship (PRA), which does not only help them financially but also allows students to work closely with ERIM best researchers.
