This course examines the social, political and economic context within which health and social services operate, locating this within the advanced study of social policy. A particular feature of the curriculum is its focus on policy, management and collaborative working structures in the context of regulation, evaluation and accountability frameworks for service delivery. It also provides a comparative analysis in which UK priorities and developments can be contrasted with issues and policies in other countries.
The course is designed to meet the needs of those working in health and welfare services as practitioners, managers or administrators. The student group is therefore multidisciplinary, and most course members combine study with full-time work. The course is also suitable for graduates with a research interest in the changing nature of health and social care in the new mixed economy of welfare. The course has recently been re-validated and re-focused. It now offers increased opportunities for you to combine your study of health and social policy with specialist modules in evaluation, management, social work practice, regeneration or public health.
An MA is awarded to students who successfully complete four core modules, two options and a triple-module dissertation.
Core modules: * Developments and Management in Community Care or Children and Changing Families: research and policy
* Issues in Contemporary Health Policy
* Social Structures and Policies
* Social Research: principles and practice
Examples of optional modules include: * Care Planning and Implementation
* Evaluation Strategies
* Health in the City
* Managing Public Services
* Urban Regeneration: policy and practice
One option can be chosen as a free module from another Masters course in the University.
You also complete a dissertation of 12,000-15,000 words within the area of health and social policy under the supervision of a personal tutor.
