London Metropolitan is one of the first universities in the UK to develop this particular MSc, which tackles a growing demand for professionals with sports-specific therapeutic skills. The course will equip you with the tools necessary to become a professional Sports Therapist, including a range of practical, patient-handling and clinical decision-making skills. Those who successfully complete the course are eligible for membership of the Society of Sports Therapists (SST) which gives you Licence to Practice as a Sports Therapist from the industry's professional body.
The University has a long history of teaching sports science and therapy courses, and an excellent record of graduate employment in these fields. Many former students work with professional, semi-professional and amateur football and rugby teams, elite-level ice hockey squads and professional cyclists, as well as in private practice, providing sports therapy and rehabilitation services within health and leisure centres. Students on this course can benefit from a range of specialist resources, from extensive WebLearn facilities to state-of-the-art equipment and teaching spaces within our £30m new Science Centre.
Our central London location is also a great benefit to sports therapy professionals, given the abundance of career opportunities and local and international networks. Our close proximity to many new sports developments such as the Emirates stadium, Wembley and the new Olympics facilities makes this an exciting time for Sports Therapists.
Careers
It is expected that graduates will progress directly into a career in Sports Therapy or related, working alongside professional sports teams, in sports and leisure centres, or on a consultancy basis. It is also possible to progress to further research.
The MSc consists of 30 weeks of taught modules divided into two 15-week semesters, with the remaining time being devoted to a research dissertation and a clinical placement module. The part-time mode follows a similar pattern over two years or more.
The course comprises a range of modules and a dissertation. As well as focusing on developing your practical and clinical problem-solving skills, the modules will include critical evaluation and analysis of the scientific evidence supporting practice, locating and understanding primary research literature, and transferable skills including advanced communication abilities. Your dissertation will normally focus on laboratory topics important to Sports Therapy, including studies of biomechanics and muscle function. Staff in the department have a high level of research and practical experience to support you with the dissertation.
Only successful completion with 200 credits will entitle you to eligibility for membership of the SST.
