Computer science and technology play a key role in every part of the modern world. The Computer Science master's programme is centred on the need for computer scientists to master the theoretical foundations of the field and be able to apply and integrate them with other technologies.
The Computer Science master's programme focuses on the acquisition of skills necessary for a career at the frontline of modern software technology such as operative system designer, Internet security specialists or game engine programmer. The programme also prepares students for a career in research or continued studies towards a doctoral degree.
The programme is taught at Linköping University, the home of one of the largest centres of computer science and engineering in Northern Europe with 175 employees, including 20 full professors, and internationally renowned for the high quality of its research and education. The research at the Department of Computer Science covers a broad spectrum of topics such as artificial intelligence, cognitive science, security, databases, distributed systems, embedded and real-time systems, human-computer interaction, software engineering.
Contents
The first semester of the programme comprises mandatory core courses in theoretical computer science and programming such as Theory of Computing and Database Technology.
The second and third semesters include elective courses based on students areas of specialisation such as: artificial intelligence, databases and data mining, internet computing, the design and programming of computer games, information security, language technology, human-computer interaction, theoretical computer science or the design and implementation of computer languages.
As the courses given during the programme address both theoretical and practical issues, applicants are expected to have an adequate background in computer science and good programming skills, see the specific requirements.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

- A Bachelor's degree (a Swedish kandidatexamen) or equivalent academic qualifications from an internationally recognised university. The university has to be listed in the latest edition of the International Handbook of Universities.
- Proof of skills in English. This is normally attested by means of an internationally recognised test, see below for more information.
- The specific requirements stated for each programme
A bachelor's degree awarded in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh or Nepal must in most cases be of four years or followed by a master's degree to meet the admission requirements.
Applicants who do not hold the required degree are eligible provided that they can prove that they are registered for the last semester of a programme leading to such a degree. An official document stating that they are likely to be awarded the degree before the start of the programme must be sent in with the application. The degree certificate has to be presented by 15 October.
Specific requirements
In addition to the general requirements, the applicant must also meet the specific requirements that apply to the different programmes, see below. The specific requirements may be assessed as not fulfilled if
- the average grade is in the lower third of the grading scale used in the country where the degree was awarded (i.e. grades have to be average/pass level or above, the equivalent to the Swedish grade "Godkänd")
- the degree does not qualify for admission to equivalent master's programmes in the country where the degree is awarded.
Programme specific requirements
Computer Science, 120 credits
Applicants are expected to have:
- a Bachelor's degree with a major in Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering.
- alternatively a Bachelor's degree with a minor in Computer Science or related subject area, with a minimum of 60 credits in computer-related subjects (e.g. Programming, Data Structures, Databases, Software Engineering, Computer Hardware, Computer Networks).
- the Bachelor should include Discrete Mathematics, Algebra, Calculus and Mathematical Statistics.
Language tests in English
Applicants must have documented skills in English corresponding to the level of English in Swedish upper secondary education (English B). For applicants who have not studied in Swedish upper secondary education, skills in English are normally attested to by means of an international language test, such as:
- Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) - Paper-based score of 4.5 (scale 1-6) in the written test with a total score of 575 and Internet-based score of 20 (scale 0-30) in the written test with a total score of 90. NB! TOEFL Examinee Score Records are not accepted. All TOEFL tests must be sent straight from Educational Testing Service (ETS).
- International English Language Testing Service (IELTS) - Academic modules, an overall mark of 6.5 and no section below 5.5
- Cambridge ESOL Certificate of Proficiency in English/CPE or Certificate in Advanced English/CAE.

Funding details
- Students who have applied for a master’s programme at Linköping University through the online national application website universityadmissions.se, and who have chosen a programme at Linköping University as their first priority (ranked as No.1 out of 4), and who are required to pay tuition fees. The scholarship is a tuition fee waiver of 50-100 %.
- This scholarship programme is not open for students from the following 12 countries: Bangladesh, Bolivia, Burkina Faso, Cambodia, Ethiopia, Kenya, Mali, Mozambique, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia. Students from these countries may apply for a Swedish Institute Scholarship.
