Location of University of Algarve

Four universities are involved in the Masters consortium. The student chooses to go to two or three universities of the consortium and studies for one year in one of the universities and for the other year in one or two of the three other universities (if the student chooses to go to 2 universities in the same year, he/she will spend one semester in each of these).

The disciplines involved are linguistics, computer science, mathematics and either two or three languages. The study programme covers taught subjects and a research project dissertation in the domain. The taught subjects are organised so that each student obtains the same fundamental knowledge and can obtain more specialised material according to the student's preference for doing either more linguistics or more computing and mathematics.

The lectures are based on fundamentals but are also in connection with the most recent research and developments in the domain. To complete the course, each student are required to obtain 120 ECTS points: 60 ECTS in taught subjects and 60 ECTS through the research project dissertation. Dissertation projects are jointly supervised by members of the teaching staff who are active in research and who also supervise PhD dissertations as well as visiting scholars - all partners of the consortium are associated with university research laboratories.

Moreover, the opportunity exists for interested students within the programme to do a non-assessed placement in a company or in a research centre.

DURATION
The duration of the course is 2 years. It starts on 1st September 2012 and finish on 31st August 2014.

Contents

The taught subjects are organised so that each student obtains the same fundamental knowledge and also more specialised material in a particular topic of his/her preference. The programme will cover fundamental aspects of each discipline as well as the most important developments of recent research; the disciplines involved are linguistics, computer science, mathematics and either two or three languages.

The student has to acquire 60 ECTS for taught modules in two or three universities. Thus, if the student studies at three universities, he/she will have to get 20 ECTS in each of them and if the student goes to two universities he or she will have to get 20 ECTS in one of the universities and 40 ECTS in the other or 30 in each of them for example. All these combinations are possible provided the student gets at least 20 ECTS of taught material in each of the universities he or she will go to and provided he/she obtains a total of 60 ECTS for taught material at the end of the 2 year course, the rest of the time being dedicated to the research project dissertation counting for 60 ECTS.

Examinations and their marking are carried out following the appropriate form (written, continuous assessment, oral) and according to the regulations of each partner university and recognised fully by the other institutions of the consortium.

PROJECT DISSERTATION
60 ECTS are obtained by completing a research project dissertation, which must be written in one of the languages of the consortium. The projects are jointly supervised by the staff of different partner universities as well as by visiting scholars. Research project dissertations can treat languages that are not necessarily European.
