The International Pathways and Language Centre offers a range of English courses that provide you with the perfect opportunity to improve your English and academic skills before you progress onto further study at Brunel or in the UK. We also provide current Brunel students with English support through a range of courses and One-2-One tutorials during their studies.
Our programmes include:
English@Brunel - This year-round programme has been designed to improve your general and academic English to prepare you for life and academic study in the UK. You will have the opportunity to practise English used in everyday situations, to develop your knowledge and understanding of grammar and vocabulary and improve your study skills for your UK university study. Courses are available from 13 - 38 weeks.
Pre-sessional courses - These courses have been designed to provide you with intensive English support before you begin your academic study at Brunel. You will develop your academic writing, listening, and presentation skills. Courses are available from 5-20 weeks throughout the summer.
In-sessional English Once you have enrolled at Brunel, we offer free academic English support for your degree course, as well as several Foreign Language courses which are free to current students.
Pre-sessional English Courses for LIBT Students. - LIBT students can take English Courses before starting their LIBT Course. Apply online or download an application form.
Why study Pre-sessional English at Brunel?
This programme offers you the perfect opportunity to focus on developing your English skills in a friendly and supportive environment.
You will have the opportunity to:
* Study between 4-20 weeks of English (subject to your requirements)
* Study in small groups - usually 12 in a class, maximum 14.
* Focus on academic English to prepare you for further study at Brunel
* Develop academic skills that will be invaluable to your study
* Participate in weekly social events both on campus and in the local area
* Visit famous UK tourist attractions e.g. Windsor and Oxford
* We will collect you from Heathrow by taxi the day before your course starts if you book.
Course Dates:
* Course 1: Start Date 21 April 2010, 20 Weeks
* Course 2: Start Date 19 May 2010, 16 Weeks
* Course 3: Start Date 16 June 2010, 12 Weeks
* Course 4: Start Date 30 June 2010, 10 Weeks
* Course 5: Start Date 14 July 2010, 8 Weeks
* Course 6: Start Date 28 July 2009, 6 Weeks
* Course 7*:Start Date 11 August 2009, 4 Weeks
*Course 7 is only offered to students who have passed both the academic and English language requirements for their course. Please note that students going onto some courses may be required to study on a longer course depending on their entry requirements - We will let you know when you make your application if this is the case.
What will you study?
This programme focuses on academic English including:
* How to write and research for an extended essay
* Presentation skills / Pronunciation
* Listening and note-taking
* Seminar skills
* Grammar and vocabulary development.
How will you be assessed?
At the end of the programme all students following the pre-sessional programme will sit the Brunel English Language Test (BrunELT). You will be tested on writing, reading, speaking and listening skills and will receive a score for each component as well as an overall score.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
