The European M.Sc. in Business Informatics equips graduates of computer science and comparable disciplines with an in-depth understanding of the business applications of information and communications technology (ICT), and how it interacts with business strategy, both within an Irish and a European context. The European M.Sc. in Business Informatics has a strong international focus, culminating in students having the option of spending the summer months undertaking a research project in a European country.

Aims and Objectives:
Business Informatics puts an emphasis on technical issues, including both Information Technology and a structured approach to modelling and analysis of business processes and business problems.

Over the course of the programme students learn how to frame a successful information strategy for business and how to develop it with the use of ICT. They also acquire an appreciation of the main cultural issues impacting on business operations in European markets. Students may spend three months following completion of their taught modules working on a major practical research project abroad, thus exposing them first-hand to international business information systems theory and practice. This international focus makes graduates particularly sought-after in an increasingly global ICT marketplace.

Career Prospects:
Career Prospects International developments have pushed industry's skills requirements beyond the limits of conventional computing degree programmes, demanding not only highly qualified technical graduates but also internationally experienced information system specialists. The European M.Sc. in Business Informatics, with its unique international focus, prepares students for demanding positions in an international environment and offers many excellent career opportunities in both industry and academia. In addition to gaining a breadth of knowledge across a range of business information systems and business process-related subjects, the European M.Sc. in Business Informatics provides students with the opportunity to hone their transferable skills, giving them a distinct professional advantage.

Upon completion of the course, graduates are attractive not only to IT consulting and software firms, but also are equipped to undertake a wide range of roles in industry such as Information Manager, System and Business Process Analyst, Information System Architect or IT Manager, both within Ireland and abroad. Companies with which they might expect to find employment include those heavily dependent on information and computing technology, such as financial services firms, insurance companies, healthcare and public service enterprises or international corporations. Here they act as Information System Architects between enterprises' business requirements and their IT solutions. In addition, graduates are prepared to take on challenging research positions in industry and academia.

Contents

The European M.Sc. in Business Informatics is designed to be completed in one calendar year of full-time study or two years of part-time study. The full-time option consists of two taught semesters followed by a practical project, referred to as a practicum, completed between May and September. The part-time option is spread out over four taught semesters followed by the practicum. This practicum consists of a research project in Ireland or in a European country. Classes for the part-time option are scheduled on two to three days per week with lectures typically during daytime in the afternoon.

Students take a set of interdisciplinary modules which provides them with a conceptual and practical understanding of how to effectively design and implement Information Systems, and align the business processes with them for maximum value in organisations. The practicum is a key feature of the programme, as it allows students to draw on the theoretical knowledge gained over the taught element and to apply it in a practical setting. Optionally conducted in another European country, it sees students undertaking research into real-world business problems related to IT. Projects may be sponsored by external clients or involve some of the students' or staff's own ideas. The practicum gives students the opportunity to demonstrate their ability to analyse problems in the field of business informatics and draw conclusions according to scientific methods within a given timeframe.

Projects may be:
Theoretical: examination of current issues in Business Informatics;
Observational: surveys of current practice or intentions;
Practical: investigation of specific industrial problems and proposal of solutions; or
Co-operative: based on work experience in a co-operating company.

The practicum provides course participants with invaluable practical experience of the similarities and differences that characterise work practices, communication, business processes and information systems in distinct marketplaces. In exceptional circumstances, there is an option available for students who are unable to undertake the practicum to obtain the qualification of Graduate Diploma in Business Informatics.

However, an understanding of the local language will make the experience more valuable.
International Applications International candidates are expected to have educational qualifications of a standard equivalent to those outlined above. In addition, where such candidates are non-native speakers of the English language they must satisfy the university of their competency in the English language.
