This innovative Masters programme is the first of its kind in Ireland and one of only two in Europe. The aim is to stimulate greater strategic thinking in procurement and meet the changing skills requirements for public and private sector professionals working with procurement. It has been endorsed by the National Public Procurement Policy Unit (NPPPU), in the Department of Finance, and the National Procurement Service in the Office of Public Works as being a suitable programme to improve the strategic procurement skills of public sector workers. Graduates are eligible for full membership of the Irish Institute of Purchasing and Materials Management (IIPMM).
As business organisations continue to experience rapid environmental and organisational changes, due to increasing globalisation, e-business and outsourcing, there is increasing attention being paid to how purchasing fits within organisations, and how it adds strategic value and contributes to corporate success. There is a distinct need for senior managers to understand the role of supply chain management philosophy in the overall business improvement process.
Aims and Objectives:
This programme takes one area of the supply chain - procurement - and focuses on its role within that supply chain and, more importantly, on its strategic impact. The specific objectives of the programme are:
* To introduce students to leading-edge thinking in the area of procurement with a view to adapting it to make it appropriate to the business and organisational contexts in which they operate.
* To develop students who are more strategically oriented and less operationally oriented.
* To develop a knowledge base through both the taught and research elements of the programme, such that students can continue professional development post-qualification.
Maximum class size will be 25. The target market will be both public and private sectors.
The programme is broken into six integrated units (Unit is being used instead of module as a module typically is being described as having 5 credits). These units reflect themes and as such are presented over the year. Each unit is worth 10 credits. 3 Units will be delivered each year. The total credits required for the Masters program is 90.
As a requirement of the masters program a research thesis will be required to be delivered by the end of the second year. It is proposed that this will be run over the course of the two years. This is worth 30 credits.
Assessment Procedures
General
Assessment of each module will be by competency test, continuous assessment (including project work), terminal examination, a combination of these elements. The nature of assessment and the percentage of marks allocated to the various elements of the assessment will depend on the module.
