Location of Dublin City University

Dublin City University's graduate programme in international governance has three separate MA degrees available:

* MA in Development (Full-time and Part-time, mixed Mode)
* MA in International Relations (Full-time and Part-time)
* MA in International Security and Conflict Studies

Until recently, development cooperation focused on sending personnel from donor states to developing states. Today, the focus is on building capacity in developing states themselves and dealing with the global structural barriers to development such as trade and debt.

This MA develops your understanding of development issues, looking at different approaches to the causes of underdevelopment and policy responses. Students will be introduced to the different perspectives on development from governments of developing states, from donor countries and agencies, from development non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and the major international development institutions (e.g. IMF, World Bank).

Aims and Objectives:
* To develop a clear and thorough knowledge of the workings of the international development system.
* To present a detailed understanding of contemporary development cooperation and the global structural barriers to development, such as trade and debt.
* To provide the opportunity to undertake interdisciplinary options such as language studies and communication studies.
* To appreciate both qualitative (e.g. comparative and case study approaches) and quantitative (i.e. statistical) research methods which will enable you to use one or both of these approaches in the completion of your dissertation.

Contents

On the one year, full-time programme, Semester 1 modules are all core while in Semester 2, students take three options. The dissertation is submitted in early September.

The MA programme features seminars and presentations by guest speakers with relevant experience and expertise, be it as politicians, officials, academics or diplomats. The intention is to facilitate the exploration of key issues in international politics, security, and development in an informal, interactive environment.

MA in Development (Part-time)
The two-year, part-time programme can be taken to Masters (90 credits), Diploma (60 credits) or Certificate (30 credits) levels. Optional specialisms are available.

The part-time programme has an innovative mode of delivery whereby students attend DCU for four weekends and an intensive week-long course in the summer in each academic year. In addition the course will utilise 'moodle', an electronic online platform to deliver work packages and resource material.
