Location of University of Iceland

The LL.M. in Natural Resources Law and International Environmental Law at the Faculty of Law, Univer­sity of Iceland is a specialised Masters-Program in law created for students from around the world who have reached a relatively high standard in their basic legal education (corresponding to a law degree after at least three years of law studies) and want to focus on legal rules relating to natural resources and issues of environment or resource management in an international and European perspective. The Program is conducted exclusively in English.

The LL.M. Program is inspired by Iceland’s unique natural setting and legal history within the field of natural resources law. It is furthermore built on the law faculties’ strenghts in this area as well as in the field of international environmental law. The Program is organised in such a way as to provide in-depth analysis in the specialised fields of natural resources and inter­national environmental law com­bined with an ample opportunity for participants to exper­ience the natural wonders and beauty of Iceland and its culture.

The Program consists of 90 ECTS, including a final paper which counts for 30 ECTS or 60 ECTS. It is a one-year Program beginning in September or January, providing participants with the opportunity to submit their final papers in August or January the next year.

Students should start by submitting an electronic copy of their thesis to Skemman. If the thesis is accepted you will receive an e-mail confirming this. This confirmation should be printed and handed in to the Service desk along with the printed copies and a declaration of access concerning all copies.

Application deadline for non-EU/non-Nordic students for Fall 2012, is 1 February 2011.

Application deadline for EU/Nordic students is 15 March 2012 for Fall 2012 and 15 October for Spring 2013


Contents

An eighteen-month postgraduate programme of study in natural resources law and international environmental law based in theory and research, culminating in the LL.M. degree at the Faculty of Law, University of Iceland (second cycle, level 4). Entrance requirements are a B.A. degree in law or the equivalent degree. The research project shall amount to 15 credit units (30 ECTS). The programme is taught in English. The LL.M. degree is not equivalent to a Mag. Jur.-, Professional-, nor Candidate's degree.
Objectives Objectives of the master's programme in natural resources law and international environmental law are to provide students with theoretical ability and training in this area of law and that they have an opportunity to deepen and enhance their knowledge of these areas, qualifying them for certain positions in society, research positions in academia, and positions in the international arena. A further objective is that students gain intellectual independence and ability to present unbiased and independent legal conclusions based on established legal methods.

Requirements

General requirements

In order to be eligible for the LL.M. Program in Natural Resources Law and International Environmental Law, a student must have completed a B.A. degree in law at the University of Iceland, or a comparable degree from another University. This basic law degree should consist of at least three years of law studies. In case of doubt as to this condition, the Master´s Programme Board can require a student to submit information as to the nature and substance of his or her studies.

Competence in English

Teaching, course work and examinations during the LL.M. Program presume a high standard of spoken and written English. All applicants, whose native language is not English, must submit a confirmation of their proficiency in English. This confirmation can either consist in a university degree conducted in English or an official score report of a standardized test in English.

The Faculty recognizes a score of 570 (230 - computer) in the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) as valid for these purposes. The Master´s Programme Board can accept equivalent results of other standardized tests, such as the IELT (International English Language Testing System) or the Cambridge Tests.

Other requirements

Applicants are required to submit at least two recommendations from persons with knowledge of the applicant´s academic abilities, preferably from a former university teacher or a professional legal superior. Furthermore, applicants are asked to submit a Statement of intent where they should describe briefly their future academic and/or professional goals, perhaps even a suggestion or outline for a final paper.
