Two year academic and research-oriented graduate programme in environmental studies and resources at the University of Iceland.
The programme is organized and administered collectively by 3 Schools at the U of I: School of Engineering and Natural Sciences, School of Humanities, School of Health Sciences and School of Social Sciences. Students are registered in and graduate from one of the faculties within the above schools with the degree magister scientarium (MS) or magister artium (MA).
The programme comprises 120 ECTS, including a research project of either 30 or 60 ECTS and qualifies graduates to be admitted to doctoral programmes at level 3.
The programme consists of 120 ECTS credits, divided between core classes, electives and a research thesis (30 - 60 ECTS). Most courses amount to 6 ECTS, indicating that each student takes approximately 5 courses each semester.
Students are expected to complete courses from different disciplines, fostering a broad understanding of environmental and resource issues, and to complete a research project. The research project offers an opportunity to explore a chosen subject in greater depth and acquire research experience.
Most students are expected have a background in one of six different fields: Engineering, natural or physical science, social science, law, humanities, or economics and business. They are required to broaden their knowledge and understanding by taking courses in at least two additional fields, chosen in consultation with their appointed supervisor.
