Students having completed the Master’s Programme in Strategy will:
• have the ability to independently apply and further develop frameworks, tools and theories in strategic management;
• have the ability to undertake strategy work in a global business environment;
• have the intercultural, interpersonal sensitivities, behaviors, attitudes as well as international connections and networks required to work and cooperate successfully across professional and cultural boundaries spanning the globe;
• have internalized the significance of lifelong learning and personal development with regard to fulfilling one’s future career excellence potential.
Content of the programme
The Master’s Programme in Strategy is co-hosted by Aalto University School of Science and Technology and School of Economics and includes courses from both schools. The curriculum includes courses in strategic management, venturing and the global dimensions of strategy work. The course ‘Developing Global Leadership Talent’ runs throughout the Master’s programme, with the idea of providing one course that ensures the social cohesion of the participants over the two-year Master’s Programme.
Students with a background in industrial engineering and management also undertake a technical module (20cr) in Communications Ecosystems or Software Engineering and Services. Students with a purely technical background (i.e. a BSc in engineering or technical domains) will not need to undertake a technical module, but are required to choose a module in management instead.
An interactive teaching approach
We believe that everything cannot be learnt in the confines of lecture halls. For this reason, numerous off-campus events deepen the learning curve whilst facilitating social networking and cohesion between programme participants. Nationality nights, social fun events and excursions in Finland and abroad are an integral part of the programme. This enables you to gain an insight into the cultures and business practices of not only Finland and the Baltic region, but also the participants’ home countries. Each student organizes in turn a Nationality Night, presenting the business culture and traditions of his home country to the other students.
The format of the Master’s Programme in Strategy is based on the one-year International Business Linkage Programme (IBLP) format, a successful one-year non-degree running at School of Science and Technology since 1991.
Corporate connections
Following the Finnish universities' pragmatic academic tradition, the hosting schools' corporate networks and alumni base, the Master's Programme boasts strong connections to the corporate world. As a participant, you will discuss real-life challenges of leading international companies during excursions, case work, assignments, and thesis work. Upon graduation, you join our global alumni network.
The program enables its graduates to develop two important core capabilities:
Excellent skills in strategic thinking: One of the keys to a successful career in strategy is having a strong command of the concepts, tools, and analytical mindset that, in combination with sound business judgment, enable effective and successful strategic management of organizations. These are skills that cannot be honed just in the classroom, but that require active use through exposure to business. The Aalto University Master’s in Strategy program builds on its faculty’s excellent connections to the Finnish and broader European business environment, and draws on its strong connections to alumni, to connect teaching and practice. Aalto University, which is the premier provider of business education in Finland, is among the top strategy schools in Europe, building on high-quality research. Many of the largest firms in Finland are located in close proximity to the university, and there is a strong culture of cooperation between academia and practice. Many of the Master’s in Strategy program’s assignments and projects are done in co-operation with these firms.
Foundation for career progression: While the command of essential skills and concepts builds the foundation, the key to career progression is the ability to navigate and excel in ever-changing situations. Strategy graduates tend to begin their careers in top-tier consultancies, multinational corporations, and investment banks, and their career progression is typically fast, taking them quickly to new settings and roles. Therefore, in addition to excellence related to management and technology, success requires skills in leadership, intercultural sensitivity, and interpersonal competences. The Master’s in Strategy program helps students to build these skills through tailored training, in a rich and multicultural learning environment shared with other highly-qualified students, providing exposure to genuine business situations, and drawing from the entrepreneurial culture of Aalto University.
To ensure the best possible learning environment, we continuously work to develop both the content and teaching methods of the program. Teaching is very interactive and emphasizes learning by doing, while maintaining academic rigor and conceptual robustness.
The students in both schools, School of Science and School of Economics, share most of the key substance courses in the program. Minors, special studies, electives and general studies vary according to the school the student attends.

Programme-specific requirements
The Department of Industrial Engineering and Management is responsible for the academic assessment of the applications for the programme. Enrolment is limited and the evaluation process is highly competitive. Applicants are assessed on the basis of the following criteria:
* previous academic performance (grades)
* content of the previous degree(s)
* relevant work experience or other relevant activity
* recommendations
* motivation and dedication to join the program, motivation to pursue a career in a domain related to strategic management;
* english language proficiency. Note: knowledge of Finnish is an asset to your daily life and career opportunities in the country, but is in no way compulsory;
* recognition of previously attended universities
* results of GMAT and/or GRE test
The most important criteria are the previous academic performance and the content of the previous degree(s).
A successful applicant should have been among the best students (top 10-15%) in his or her home university. The degree certificate and/or the official transcript of university records should clearly indicate this. For example, an applicant has achieved consistently the best grades throughout the degree studies (very high weighted average grade or GPA), which typically leads to graduation with distinction. When evaluating each applicant’s academic performance, we emphasize the grades achieved in the degree that gives the eligibility for applying.
A successful applicant should also have a valid degree in the field of technology, or some other applicable field. Therefore, preference will be given to applicants with B.Sc. degrees in engineering, natural sciences, mathematics or computer science. The applicant’s degree studies should indicate that she or he has good knowledge of one technical discipline and engineering mathematics plus basic knowledge of management. The desired amount of management studies is 20 ECTS, covering at least the basic concepts of strategy, finance, operations management, economics, and organizational behaviour.
If the applicant has several relevant degrees, all attached information will affect the assessment concerning performance and content. However, the number of degrees or amount of studies is not a criterion. The Selection Board reserves the right to decide whether or not a degree and/or a university meet the criteria.
Students chosen to the Strategy programme may be required to complement their earlier degree with complementary studies. All students with a Finnish University of Applied Sciences (AMK) degree are required to take complementary studies package. Complementary or personal complementary studies cannot be included in the Master’s degree.
