The master’s programme in International Project Management is run as a cooperation initiative between Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden and Northumbria University in Newcastle upon Tyne in the UK.
The programme provides students with a systematic understanding of project management and a critical awareness of current problems and/or new insights. The international view is strengthened by studies at two different universities in two different countries.Students are required to study in both countries, and they receive a double degree – one master's degree from each university.
Students with a bachelor’s degree in an engineering field often become project managers after a short time as an engineer. The programme was designed to combine naturally with an engineering degree for individuals interested in working in project management in an international environment.
Who should apply
The programme is generic and applicants can have a background from any area of engineering, natural science or architecture. The mixture of students with different experiences gives the programme an interesting profile where level of competence is increased.
Why apply
An increasing number of companies work in an international environment. Project managers need to be prepared for the challenges involved in working with people from different cultures. Studying in two different countries and working together with students from other parts of the world provides an opportunity to practise the theories during the study period.
Good effective project management requires appropriately balanced combinations of explicit and tacit knowledge, professional practical experience and professional behaviour. This perspective stimulates adoption of a philosophy for the programme that is designed to engender an ethos of partnership between students, academia and industry.
The modules in the first term deal with project management from four different perspectives:
the human perspective, the organisational perspective, the business perspective and the management perspective.
The second term focuses on important areas of project management. Although international aspects are a common feature, a special module focuses specifically on international projects. Leadership and communication are other important aspects, as are knowledge management and learning.
The third term at Northumbria University offers a broader perspective on project management. Other important issues are studied during this term, such as how risk and value can be managed. Different research methods are studied in preparation of the master's thesis that is written the final term. The master’s thesis involves individual research on a topic related to project management. This can be carried out at either of the two partner universities.
Research connections
The programme is linked to the research carried out at the two cooperating universities. Both universities perform qualified research in management fields, and the lecturers provide a close connection to the research being performed.
The programme is also linked to industry throughout the two years. Students’ assignments are carried out in connection with industry, and they participate in conferences and complete projects where industry is involved.
