The aim is to provide officers and shore-based personnel in the shipping cluster an opportunity to further educate themselves to become the next generation of leaders in the shipping cluster and enable them to participate in research education. The programme is currently jointly offered by Chalmers University of Technology, Åland University of Applied Sciences, Novia University of Applied Sciences and Vestfold University College.
Nordic Master is part of the adaptation of the shipping education structure to the Bologna process.
Who should apply
The ideal candidate for the programme is a professionally active person who has worked a few years in the maritime industry after receiving a BSc degree in nautical science, marine engineering, shipping and logistics, science in engineering and ship automation or an equivalent education. Work experience is an asset but not mandatory, however. The students vary in age from under 30 to over 50, which results in a dynamic setting and valuable discussions.
Why apply
The programme offers an opportunity for officers and shore-based personnel in the shipping cluster to enhance their knowledge in maritime management and acquire a master’s degree from Chalmers University of Technology.
Career
G raduates from the programme can apply for management positions at companies in the shipping cluster including operation manager, purchaser, technical superintendent, marine superintendent, broker etc. Graduates have sufficient knowledge to apply for research studies in the following areas: maritime environment, ship safety, human factors, surveying etc.
Connections
Nordic Master is part of the adaptation of the shipping education structure to the Bologna process. NOMAR students already have a great deal of experience from the maritime industry, so lectures and study content are up-to date and based on realistic scenarios. As a result, we also invite several different guest lecturers from the industry to speak. There is a growing need for researchers with experience of life at sea. There is also a need for competent and educated leaders, both onboard ships and in onshore organisations – leaders who can guide the shipping industry into a new era faced with demands for effective logistics solutions, strict quality demands and very strict requirements aimed at preventing environmental pollution. The programme is aimed at three groups:
officers looking for broader and more in-depth knowledge of operating a vessel, officers looking for a shore-based job in the shipping cluster and shore-based personnel looking for more in-depth knowledge in shipping and logistics.
Most students work and study at the same time and many of them are seafarers. Therefore, the study plan consists of concentrated meetings to enable students to combine work and studies.
Meetings within the programme generally take place one week per month and mostly at Chalmers. Every term students travel and visit one of the participating academies for a few days. Accommodation and travel costs are covered by the students. Between meetings, students prepare their assignments and perform group work projects using the online study platform.
