In the Master Programme in Molecular Biotechnology, you will study several of the scientific fields where Uppsala University has world-leading research - molecular biology, genomics and biochemistry. The programme focuses on biomolecules and the development of technology, with Uppsala´s long tradition and experience of biotechnology development. Excellent cooperation between Uppsala University and the biotechnical industry is a unique factor that has contributed to the region being the strongest in Sweden for "Life Science".
The programme rests securely on these proud traditions. In our courses, you will meet both the researchers and tutors who work with researching central biological issues and those who develop tomorrow´s techniques and products.
The exciting development within modern biology has its origins in the research carried out in technology, computer science and new interdisciplinary areas such as systems biology, bioinformatics and synthetic biology. This development opens new opportunities for the systematic analysis and interpretation of complex biological systems that could not previously be done. For example, we can now examine and analyze all proteins expressed in a human being. However, the developments seen in the life sciences also imply high demands on the knowledge and proficiencies of researchers with, for example, mathematics and data modeling.
A master of science programme in molecular biotechnology engineering was started in Uppsala in 1991 to prepare students for the special challenges found in this exciting technical field. The programme has been a great success and students have succeeded in building careers in both industry and academic research. The specialization towards molecular biotechnology takes place primarily in the last two years, and these courses are now provided as an international Master Programme in Molecular Biotechnology.
Biology/Biotechnology/Bioinformatics at Uppsala has been conferred the CHE Excellency Ranking seal of quality by the German Centre for Higher Education Development.
The Master Programme in Molecular Biotechnology is focused on the structure and function of biomolecules. The programme provides you with knowledge of how these vital molecules can be analyzed, separated and modified. This programme is suitable for students and professionals who wish to have an advanced specialization in molecular biotechnology, and provides both theoretical knowledge and practical proficiencies in the field of biotechnology.
After an introduction course that contains course units chosen depending on previous knowledge, all students of the programme will take the same courses during the first year. A majority of the courses, such as immunology, molecular diagnostics methods and protein biotechnology are focused on biomolecules and their use in biotechnological applications.
During the second year of the programme, the student may choose courses and further specialize within a particular area, such as the dynamics of biomolecules and molecular systems biology. You may also gain practical experience at a research institute or a company and thus take part in the development of a method or in basic research. You will also have excellent opportunities to broaden your knowledge in other relevant fields such as bioinformatics and chemistry.
The programme is concluded with a degree project at one of our excellent research departments, a government agency or at a biotechnology company
Instruction takes place in small groups and in close cooperation with our researchers. Perhaps you will work with current development projects during the course. Biotechnology is characterized by international cooperation, and through our tutors you will gain access to a network that embraces the entire world, something you could use to develop a career outside Sweden.
With a master degree in molecular biotechnology from Uppsala University, you will have excellent career opportunities both in academic research and in biotechnical industry in Sweden and internationally.
Depending on your specialization, in the future you will perhaps develop new diagnostic tools in health and medical care, or work with product development of separation methods for protein.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.
